Nu st\u00e4rker vi v\u00e5ra hj\u00e4ltar (handledarna)<\/h2>\n

N\u00e4sta m\u00e5nad \u00e4r det \u00e5terigen dags f\u00f6r promovering av KTH:s nyutexaminerade doktorer. \u00c4ven i \u00e5r \u00e4r det ett ansenligt antal nya doktorer fr\u00e5n ITM-skolan som kan fira sina framg\u00e5ngar. Det goda utfallet f\u00f6r v\u00e5r forskarutbildning \u00e4r givetvis fr\u00e4mst ett resultat av doktorandernas anstr\u00e4ngningar, men det \u00e4r viktigt att betona att det ocks\u00e5 \u00e4r helt beroende av de dagliga insatser som g\u00f6rs av skolans m\u00e5nga handledare. Bra handledare \u00e4r nyckeln till en v\u00e4l fungerande forskarutbildning. I de olika enk\u00e4ter som genomf\u00f6rts bland v\u00e5ra doktorander framkommer det ocks\u00e5 tydligt att de problem som ibland uppst\u00e5r under forskarutbildningen ofta beror p\u00e5 bristf\u00e4llig handledning. \u00c4ven om KTH:s riktlinjer och verktyg, s\u00e5som den individuella studieplanen (ISP), kan bidra till att skapa ett bra samarbete mellan doktorand och handledare s\u00e5 h\u00e4nger mycket p\u00e5 den enskilda handledarens kompetens. Inte bara kunskapen inom det egna forskningsomr\u00e5det utan ocks\u00e5 f\u00f6rm\u00e5gan att handleda.<\/p>\n

F\u00f6r att ytterligare st\u00e4rka v\u00e5ra handledares kompetens kommer vi med start den 12 oktober att ha gemensamma sammankomster f\u00f6r skolans handledarkollegium. Alla handledare inom forskarutbildningen \u00e4r inbjudna att delta. Jag hoppas givetvis p\u00e5 god uppslutning. Vid detta f\u00f6rsta tillf\u00e4lle kommer vi att fokusera p\u00e5 v\u00e5ra regelverk, riktlinjer och normer, men ocks\u00e5 f\u00e5 information om v\u00e5r handledarutbildning och insikter fr\u00e5n genomf\u00f6rda doktorandenk\u00e4ter. Till det p\u00e5f\u00f6ljande m\u00f6tet den 16 december kommer vi att bjuda in s\u00e5v\u00e4l handledare som doktorander f\u00f6r att diskutera samf\u00f6rfattande och f\u00f6rfattarskap, n\u00e5got som ibland kan vara problematiskt, inte minst i relationen mellan handledare och doktorand.<\/p>\n

Ambitionen \u00e4r att ha tv\u00e5 m\u00f6ten per termin och jag ser fram emot att handledare och doktorander kommer med f\u00f6rslag p\u00e5 intressanta teman f\u00f6r dessa m\u00f6ten. Det kan r\u00f6ra sig om seminarier och workshops p\u00e5 relevanta teman som exempelvis arbetsmilj\u00f6 och stress, akademisk effektivitet och publiceringsstrategier, men ocks\u00e5 hur vi sprider goda exempel och diskuterar olika problemsituationer som kan uppst\u00e5. Om det \u00e4r n\u00e5got specifikt \u00e4mne du vill att vi tar upp som relaterar till handledning ser jag fram emot att h\u00f6ra av dig. Det finns oerh\u00f6rt mycket kunskap och f\u00e4rdigheter i \u00e4mnet p\u00e5 v\u00e5r skola. Jag hoppas att vi med dessa m\u00f6ten kommer g\u00f6ra det lite l\u00e4ttare att sprida dessa till v\u00e5ra kollegor.<\/p>\n

Strengthening the superheroes (the supervisors)<\/h2>\n

Next month, it\u2019s time for The Conferment of doctoral degrees for KTH’s newly graduated doctors. Also this year, a considerable number of new doctors from the ITM school can celebrate their successes. The excellent outcome of our Third-Cycle Education is of course primarily a result of the doctoral students’ efforts, but it is important to emphasize that it is also entirely dependent on the daily efforts made by the school’s many supervisors. Skilled supervisors are critical to a well-functioning Third-Cycle Education. In the various surveys carried out among our doctoral students, it is also clear that the problems that sometimes arise during this period are caused by insufficient supervision. Although KTH’s guidelines and tools, such as ISP, can contribute to creating a good collaboration between doctoral students and supervisors, the competence of the individual supervisor is key. Not only the knowledge within one’s research area but also the ability to supervise.<\/p>\n

In order to further strengthen the competence of our supervisors, we will have joint meetings for the school’s supervisory board, starting on October 12. All supervisors within Third-Cycle Education are invited to participate. I hope that many will show up. On this first occasion, we will focus on our regulations, guidelines and standards but also receive information about our supervisor training and insights from doctoral surveys. In the following meeting (December 16), we will invite both supervisors and doctoral students to discuss co-authorship and authorship, something that can sometimes be problematic, not least in the relationship between supervisor and doctoral student.<\/p>\n

The ambition is to have two meetings per semester, and I look forward to supervisors and doctoral students contributing with suggestions for interesting themes for future meetings. This may involve seminars and workshops such as work environment and stress, academic efficiency and publication strategies, but also how we spread good examples and discuss various problem situations that may arise. If there is a specific topic, you would like us to cover that relates to supervisory I look forward to hearing from you. There is an enormous amount of knowledge and skills in this field at our school. I hope that with these meetings we will make it a little easier to spread the knowledge to our colleagues.<\/p>\n
