F\u00f6rst firar vi, men sen ska vi v\u00e4nda trenden<\/strong><\/h2>\n

F\u00f6r drygt tv\u00e5 veckor sedan tog 49 nya ITM-doktorer emot sina diplom vid KTH:s \u00e5rliga promoveringsh\u00f6gtid. Efter pandemins restriktioner var det den f\u00f6rsta fullskaliga promoveringen. Det \u00e4r gl\u00e4djande att s\u00e5 m\u00e5nga doktorer tog m\u00f6jligheten att fira sina avslutade forskarstudier med n\u00e4rst\u00e5ende och handledare. Jag hoppas att alla som deltog i festligheterna fick en bekr\u00e4ftelse p\u00e5 hur viktig forskarutbildningen rent generellt \u00e4r f\u00f6r ett universitet som KTH. En v\u00e4ldigt stor del av den forskning som g\u00f6rs p\u00e5 KTH utf\u00f6rs av v\u00e5ra forskarstuderande och en v\u00e4l fungerande forskarutbildning \u00e4r en nyckel till s\u00e5v\u00e4l m\u00e5nga och bra publikationer som produktiva samarbeten med industrin. D\u00e4rmed ocks\u00e5 av st\u00f6rsta vikt f\u00f6r exempelvis v\u00e5r ranking.<\/p>\n

\u00c4ven om vi naturligtvis ska fira finns det ocks\u00e5 viss grund f\u00f6r oro fram\u00e5t. Trots att s\u00e5 m\u00e5nga doktorer examinerats de senaste \u00e5ren kan vi konstatera att prestationsmedlen f\u00f6r utexaminerade doktorer och licentiater till ITM sjunkit betydligt, och det kan bli v\u00e4rre fram\u00f6ver. En f\u00f6rklaring \u00e4r att vissa andra delar av KTH har \u00f6kat antalet examinerade doktorer och d\u00e4rf\u00f6r f\u00e5r en st\u00f6rre andel av de totala medlen. Vid en f\u00f6rsta snabb analys p\u00e5 ITM ser vi att antalet nyantagna forskarstuderande visar en ned\u00e5tg\u00e5ende trend samtidigt som genomloppstiden ser ut att \u00f6ka. Det kr\u00e4vs sannolikt en noggrannare analys f\u00f6r att verkligen se vad som ligger bakom denna f\u00f6r\u00e4ndring, och jag hoppas givetvis vi ska hitta ett bra s\u00e4tt att v\u00e4nda utvecklingen.<\/p>\n

Jag vill ocks\u00e5 ta tillf\u00e4llet i akt att p\u00e5minna om n\u00e4sta handledarkollegium den 16\/12. P\u00e5 agendan d\u00e5 st\u00e5r bland annat f\u00f6rfattarskap och krav\/normer avseende publikationer i sammanl\u00e4ggningsavhandlingar. Jag vet att julledigheten \u00e4r bara ett par veckor bort och att den h\u00e4r perioden f\u00f6r m\u00e5nga \u00e4r en av de mest intensiva under hela \u00e5ret, men jag hoppas att du trots det kan hitta tid i kalendern f\u00f6r att delta p\u00e5 m\u00f6tet. M\u00e5nga har redan anm\u00e4lt sig, men vi ser g\u00e4rna \u00e4nnu fler deltagare.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s celebrate and then change the trend<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Just over two weeks ago, 49 new ITM doctors received their diplomas at KTH’s annual doctoral award ceremony. It was the first full-scale ceremony after the pandemic\u2019s restrictions. It is gratifying that so many doctors took the opportunity to celebrate their completed research studies with relatives and supervisors. I hope that everyone who took part in the festivities got a confirmation of how important third-cycle studies are for a university like KTH. A very large part of the research carried out at KTH is carried out by our third-cycle education students and is key to many and good publications as well as productive collaborations with industry. Thus, also crucial for, for example, our ranking.<\/p>\n

Naturally, we must celebrate, but there is also reason for concern going forward. Despite the fact that so many doctors have been examined in recent years, we can state that the performance-based funding for graduated doctors and licentiates at ITM have dropped significantly, and it may get worse in the future. One explanation is that other parts of KTH have increased the number of doctoral graduates and therefore receive a larger share of the total funds. A quick analysis of ITM shows that the number of newly admitted PhD students have a downward trend, while the throughput time appears to increase. A more careful analysis is probably required to see what is behind this change, and I of course hope we will find a good way to turn the trend.<\/p>\n

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind you of the next supevisor meeting on Dec 16. On the agenda are, among other things, authorship and requirements\/norms regarding publications in compilation theses. I know that the Christmas holidays are only a couple of weeks away and this period is one of the most intense of the whole year for many of us, but I hope that you can still find time to attend the meeting. Many have already registered, but we would like to see even more participants.<\/p>\n
