It is clear that many activities take place within the ITM School. All six departments and the University Administration ITM wish to contribute to this process. For example, at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, a survey was distributed to all employees to ask how they use the offices and laboratories when working at KTH. This was done in order to inquire how especially the office spaces can be used in a better way. Overall, I think it makes a whole lot of sense first to evaluate the individual needs and then optimise so that it is possible to increase the use of our offices and at the same time improve the working environment. When I visit different parts of ITM I see many empty rooms. This is not optimal since we could use our resources to invest in employees instead of paying for empty rooms.

Why are so many rooms empty?

One reason is that we have learned to work from home during the covid period. Currently, working from home two days a week is possible, which many employees find very attractive. Another reason is that some people working from home claim it is useless to come to work if there are no colleagues at work. Thus, we need to create working environments that make employees want to come to work while at the same time optimising the offices so that we can lower the cost. You will hear more about this subject throughout the year because it is a prioritised area by the President!

Remember the examinator course

In teaching I just finished the “Examinator course” which KTH introduced as a requirement for all teachers that want to remain examinators. It was a good opportunity to get updated on the laws we must follow. Here is a reminder that all teachers need to complete the course before the end of March in order to keep on being an examinator.

Currently, I am also planning field trips in courses. During the pandemic, it was not possible for our students to visit companies. Instead, we had to use videos and online visits to replace the field trips. I think the online versions helped the students to get a general view of the industrial process chain. But they can never replace the experience when visiting an industrial site for real. During a field trip the students can observe the processes discussed in class, which reinforces their understanding. In addition, they get to meet engineers working in the industry.

Here, we usually ask the students to interview engineers about their tasks during a typical working day. Then, we ask them to reflect on the tasks they would be most interested in having when they graduate from KTH. Our experiences is that this makes the students start to think about their first career goals and identify elective courses they wish to take in order to support their working goals.

Is spring arriving?

Finally, I realised one morning that we had entered a time of the year when the days were getting longer. It is suddenly a surprise to both go to work and leave for home when it is light, depending on your working schedule, of course! This, along with the possibility of taking walks in the sun during lunches gives most of us a new boost of energy. Last week, I was really surprised to see some flowers coming up in a green area close to the KTH library.

Is this a sign that spring has arrived? Most likely not, but it is a sign that nature is ready to wake up when the sun and warmth return after this long winter. If you like me long for spring, I suggest trying something new. If you wish to get a head start in the garden to grow garlic and onions, you might want to try what we are doing at home; see the picture.
