Ekonomi i balans, det \u00e4r nog de allra flesta av oss drillade i sedan barnsben. Om det var tomt i portmonn\u00e4n fanns det heller inget att handla f\u00f6r. N\u00e4r jag \u00e4nd\u00e5 f\u00f6rs\u00f6kte f\u00e5 en slant extra och v\u00e4djade med orden, \u201dom bara\u201d… eller \u201dmen …,\u201d d\u00e5 sa pappa alltid: \u201dT\u00e4nk om dessa tv\u00e5 ord inte fanns hur skulle du d\u00e5 l\u00f6sa det hela?\u201d<\/p>\n

Just nu arbetar vi p\u00e5 ITM-skolan med att f\u00e5 ekonomin i balans. Nu r\u00f6r det sig inte om en portmonn\u00e4 utan belopp som jag som barn inte kunde dr\u00f6mma om, inte ens n\u00e4r man spelade monopol. Jag \u00e4r uppv\u00e4xt i en arbetarfamilj, d\u00e4r pappa var guldsmed och mamma var hemma och tog hand om v\u00e5ra liv, skulle man kunna s\u00e4ga. Mamma stod f\u00f6r all markservice, vi var v\u00e4l omh\u00e4ndertagna men gott om slantar var det inte. D\u00e4rf\u00f6r har jag f\u00e5tt l\u00e4ra mig vara ekonomisk.<\/p>\n

P\u00e5 ITM arbetar vi intensivt med att ta fram siffror, statistik och data kopplat till utbildning, forskning, lokaler, infrastruktur med mera. M\u00e5nga \u00e4r engagerade och k\u00e4rn- och st\u00f6dverksamheten arbetar tillsammans med detta. Men n\u00e4r vi diskuterar ekonomin inom skolan faller vi d\u00e5 och d\u00e5 tillbaka till just de d\u00e4r tv\u00e5 orden: \u201dom bara\u201d och \u201dmen\u201d. Vi har ocks\u00e5 ett tredje uttryck numera: \u201dkanske rektor kan\u2026\u201d \u00a0Naturligtvis hamnar vi d\u00e4r n\u00e4r vi k\u00e4nner oss lite hj\u00e4lpl\u00f6sa och inte riktigt vet hur vi ska hantera situationen. Vi har redan sagt upp lokaler f\u00f6r ca 13Mkr \u00e5rligen, men tyv\u00e4rr r\u00e4cker inte det f\u00f6r att v\u00e4nda skutan \u2013 \u00e4ven om vi \u00e4r p\u00e5 god v\u00e4g. Hur l\u00f6ser vi detta utan \u201dom bara; men och rektorn kanske kan\u2026\u201d?<\/p>\n

F\u00f6rslag p\u00e5 handlingsplaner finns och dessa ska diskuteras p\u00e5 skolans ledningsinternat 19-20 juni.<\/p>\n

Som alltid m\u00e5ste \u00e4ven st\u00f6dverksamheten f\u00f6lja \u00f6vrig verksamhet. N\u00e4r institutionerna s\u00e5g till att dra ner p\u00e5 lokalytorna var det lika sj\u00e4lvklart att st\u00f6dverksamheten gjorde detsamma. Nu n\u00e4r institutionerna ser \u00f6ver vad som kan g\u00f6ras f\u00f6r att bli mer kostnadseffektiva, kommer vi inom st\u00f6det att se \u00f6ver hur vi kan bidra till detta. Hur det ska g\u00e5 till \u00e4r inga sj\u00e4lvklarheter, d\u00e5 hade vi redan gjort det. Vi m\u00e5ste tillsammans inom st\u00f6dverksamheten se \u00f6ver hur vi kan blir mer kostnadseffektiva utan att det p\u00e5verkar vad vi levererar. Som alltid kommer vi att l\u00f6sa det tillsammans. Det \u00e4r inte f\u00f6rsta g\u00e5ngen vi ska t\u00e4nka nytt eller st\u00e4lla om. Och vi ska akta oss f\u00f6r \u201dom bara\u201d, \u201dmen\u201d och \u201drektorn kanske kan\u2026\u201d.\u00a0 Den goda viljan finns, det visar ni alla dagar i veckan det \u00e4r ett privilegium att vara avdelningschef f\u00f6r VS ITM tack vare er.<\/p>\n

I skrivande stund sitter jag med balkongd\u00f6rren \u00f6ppen, solen gassar, M\u00e4laren glittrar och jag h\u00f6r musik och skrik \u2013 det \u00e4r studentutsl\u00e4pp! Kanske n\u00e5gra av dem forts\u00e4tter fr\u00e5n flaket till nollning p\u00e5 KTH i h\u00f6st.<\/p>\n

Med andra ord \u2013 det \u00e4r sommarlov! Men vi f\u00e5r avvakta n\u00e5gra veckor till semestrarna. N\u00e4r den v\u00e4l \u00e4r h\u00e4r, s\u00e5 \u00f6nskar jag er alla en riktigt sk\u00f6n sommar.<\/p>\n

If the wallet is empty, it is empty<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Balanced finances \u2013 the vast majority of us learned this as children. If the wallet was empty, there were no means to shop for. When I tried to get an extra penny and pleaded with the words “if only”… or “but …,” Dad always said: “Imagine if these two words didn’t exist, how would you solve the problem?”<\/p>\n

Currently, the ITM school is working to get the finances in balance. It’s not about a purse anymore; the amount of money we are talking about I couldn’t even dream of as a child, not even when playing Monopoly. I grew up in a working-class family, where my father was a goldsmith, and my mother was at home taking care of our lives, you could say. Mum took care of the essential services, and we were well taken care of, but there wasn’t an abundance of money. Therefore, I have had to learn to be economical.<\/p>\n

At ITM, we work intensively on finding statistics, figures, and data linked to education, research, premises, infrastructure, etc. We are all committed, and the core business and support services work together with this. But when we discuss finances within the school, we occasionally fall back on just those words: “if only” and “but.” These days we have a third expression: “Maybe the President can…” Of course, this happens when we feel somewhat helpless and don’t know how to handle the situation. We have already gotten rid of premises for approx. SEK 13 million annually, but unfortunately, it is not enough to turn the tide – even if we are on the right track. How do we solve this without \u201cif only, but maybe the principal can\u2026\u201d?<\/p>\n

Proposals for action plans are available and will be discussed at the school’s management conference on June 19-20.<\/p>\n

As always, support services must follow its core business. When the departments reduced their premises, the support services did the same. Now that the departments are reviewing what can be done to become more cost-effective, the support services will review how to contribute. Still, we don\u2019t know how, then we would have already done it. Together we must analyze how to be more cost-effective without affecting what we deliver. As always, we will work it out. It’s not the first time we’ve had to rethink or change. And we must beware of “if only,” “but,” and “maybe the President can…”. The good intentions are there; you all show it every day of the week; thanks to you, it is a privilege to be the head of VS ITM.<\/p>\n

While writing this, I’m sitting with the balcony door open, the sun is shining, Lake M\u00e4laren is sparkling, and I hear music and loud voices – it’s students celebrating! Maybe some will continue from the truck beds to \u201cnollningen\u201d at KTH this autumn.\u00a0In other words \u2013 it’s summer! But we have to wait a few weeks until vacation time. Once it’s here, I wish you all a lovely summer.<\/p>\n
