This year, my summer vacation felt unusually long. I didn’t take more time off than usual, but I think the feeling stems from the fact that I was better at truly disconnecting – staying away from emails and not trying to catch up on pending writing or article reviews. I hope those of you who found the spring semester particularly busy had the chance to rest and recharge. We still have significant work ahead to ensure our finances are balanced, both in education and research. I’m hopeful that this fall, we’ll start to see clear signs that we’re on the right track.

In June, I had the great pleasure of co-hosting the R&D Management conference with Mats Engwall, which ultimately attracted over 700 participants. Thanks to the outstanding efforts of our colleagues and students, the entire event ran smoothly, and we received a lot of positive feedback. A special thanks goes to Evelina Håden, a PhD student at INDEK, for her excellent management of all the practical details during the final planning and execution of the conference. Without her help, Mats and I would have certainly needed significantly more time off to recover. Although organizing large conferences is a major undertaking, I hope we’ll see more of them at the ITM School in the future. It was clear that our international guests thoroughly enjoyed visiting KTH and Stockholm, and it was equally gratifying to see so many colleagues from Swedish universities. Our campus is a fantastic asset, and I hope more people take the opportunity to showcase our environment and promote the image of an attractive university, especially now that president Anders has made it much more affordable to use our facilities for conferences.

Two weeks ago, I had the privilege of attending the Academy of Management conference in Chicago, along with a handful of colleagues and about 10,000 other researchers from around the world. Usually, the overwhelming feeling at this conference is that you’re missing out on almost everything. You can only attend a fraction of the fascinating sessions, inevitably missing out on many interesting papers, workshops, and panel discussions. However, this year, the most striking impression was how pervasive artificial intelligence was throughout the conference. About a third of the content touched on various aspects of how AI is transforming the way we manage and organize work, particularly knowledge work such as research and development. Perhaps the intense focus on AI is due to the profound impact these new technologies may have on our own activities. While not all the hopes for AI solutions may materialize as quickly as anticipated, the examples emerging suggest we are heading into an exciting and challenging future in our field.

A key takeaway from the conference was that imposing AI on employees doesn’t seem to be very effective. Instead, nearly all successful examples were driven by personal initiatives that gradually developed and spread. I hope many such experiments are already underway at ITM, both in education and research, and that we can soon share these insights across departments and schools.

/Mats Magnusson, Second Deputy Head of the ITM School

In English further down.
