Jag hoppas att alla ni som \u00e4r lediga f\u00e5r en v\u00e4lf\u00f6rtj\u00e4nt paus fr\u00e5n arbete och att ni kommer tillbaka med fulladdade batterier. Sj\u00e4lv hade jag i m\u00e5ndags n\u00f6jet att k\u00f6ra ig\u00e5ng en ny kurs, n\u00e5got jag alltid ser lika mycket fram emot. P\u00e5 grund av campusflytten har det i \u00e5r varit lite sv\u00e5rare \u00e4n vanligt att hantera schemal\u00e4ggning och salsbokning men jag hoppas att det l\u00f6st sig p\u00e5 ett bra s\u00e4tt f\u00f6r alla.<\/p>\n<p>F\u00f6rra veckan hade vi i skolledningen bes\u00f6k av KTH:s ledning med rektor Anders S\u00f6derholm i spetsen f\u00f6r \u00e5rets skoldialog. Fokus f\u00f6r m\u00f6tet var till st\u00f6rsta del ekonomin och kvalitetsuppf\u00f6ljning av v\u00e5ra utbildningar. Vad g\u00e4ller utbildningskvaliteten vill jag f\u00f6rst och fr\u00e4mst tacka alla som bidragit till arbetet. Vi har i \u00e5r anv\u00e4nt ett nytt system f\u00f6r kvalitetsuppf\u00f6ljningen, vilket f\u00f6r forskarutbildningen inneburit att handledning, studiemilj\u00f6 och progressuppf\u00f6ljning \u00e4gnats mer uppm\u00e4rksamhet. Jag ser detta som en v\u00e4ldigt positiv utveckling d\u00e5 vi vet att dessa faktorer har stor inverkan p\u00e5 hur forskarutbildningen fungerar. N\u00e4sta \u00e5r kommer vi l\u00e4gga mer fokus p\u00e5 uppf\u00f6ljningen av kurserna p\u00e5 forskarutbildningsniv\u00e5, d\u00e4r kan vi fortfarande bli mycket b\u00e4ttre. Vi ser fortfarande att det erbjuds alltf\u00f6r f\u00e5 kurser f\u00f6r v\u00e5ra doktorander. D\u00e4rf\u00f6r vill jag uppmuntra er att anm\u00e4la de FU-kurser ni vill ge under v\u00e5ren, deadline f\u00f6r detta \u00e4r 11 november. Under diskussionerna med rektorn om v\u00e5r grundutbildning framkom det tydligt att det mesta fungerar v\u00e4l och att kvaliteten p\u00e5 den utbildning vi erbjuder \u00e4r h\u00f6g. Trots det verkar vi tappa attraktionskraft inom vissa omr\u00e5den och det \u00e4r viktigt att vi verkligen kommer ig\u00e5ng med att se \u00f6ver och f\u00f6rnya v\u00e5r programportf\u00f6lj, ett arbete som redan p\u00e5b\u00f6rjats. F\u00f6r att vi i framtiden ska kunna leverera relevant och h\u00f6gkvalitativ utbildning p\u00e5 ett effektivt s\u00e4tt, beh\u00f6ver vi ta ett helhetsgrepp om fr\u00e5gan och inte bara arbeta med enstaka kurser och program, utan hela utbildningsutbudet liksom v\u00e5ra arbetsprocesser. Utvecklingsarbetet kommer allts\u00e5 att ber\u00f6ra m\u00e5nga av oss, och er energi och kompetens kommer att beh\u00f6vas.<\/p>\n<p>De anstr\u00e4ngningar som vi har gjorts kring ekonomin b\u00f6rjar synas v\u00e4ldigt tydligt i v\u00e5ra prognoser och resultat! Efter tv\u00e5 \u00e5r med betydande negativa resultat ser det nu ut som att denna tr\u00e5kiga trend brutits. Detta har givetvis inte h\u00e4nt av sig sj\u00e4lv. Bakom f\u00f6rb\u00e4ttringen ligger alla de anstr\u00e4ngningar som gjorts p\u00e5 skolan f\u00f6r att f\u00e5 ekonomin i balans. H\u00e4r vill jag i synnerhet lyfta fram de insatser som gjorts f\u00f6r att h\u00f6ja TAK-beloppet, vilket medf\u00f6rt en p\u00e5taglig \u00f6kning av studentantalet p\u00e5 v\u00e5ra program och kurser, och arbetet med kursbudgetar f\u00f6r att kunna anpassa kostnaderna efter de int\u00e4kter f\u00e5r f\u00f6r v\u00e5ra kurser. Vi har ocks\u00e5 f\u00e5tt betydligt fler beviljade externfinansierade projekt, en direkt f\u00f6ljd av den m\u00f6da och tid som m\u00e5nga kollegor lagt ned p\u00e5 ans\u00f6kningsskrivande. Vi kan ocks\u00e5 konstatera att v\u00e5ra lokalkostnader nu \u00e4r nere p\u00e5 de niv\u00e5er vi hade f\u00f6r n\u00e5gra \u00e5r sedan, trots de senaste \u00e5rens ohemula hyresh\u00f6jningar fr\u00e5n Akademiska Hus. Man ska ju inte ropa hej f\u00f6r tidigt, men sammantaget ser det ekonomiska l\u00e4get lovande ut. Min f\u00f6rhoppning \u00e4r att det ska ge ITM-skolan det handlingsutrymme som beh\u00f6vs f\u00f6r att under de kommande \u00e5ren f\u00f6rnya och utveckla v\u00e5r verksamhet i en positiv riktning, inom s\u00e5v\u00e4l forskning som utbildning.<\/p>\n<p>\/Mats Magnusson, andre vice skolchef p\u00e5 ITM<\/p>\n<h2>Efforts starting to pay off<\/h2>\n<p>After the switch to winter time, this week marks both the autumn break and the start of new courses. I hope those of you taking time off are enjoying a well-deserved rest and will return fully recharged. On Monday, I had the pleasure of kicking off a new course\u2014something I always look forward to. This year, due to the campus relocation, scheduling and room booking have been a bit more challenging than usual, but I hope it\u2019s gone smoothly for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the school\u2019s management team hosted a visit from the KTH management, led by President Anders S\u00f6derholm, for this year\u2019s school dialogue. The focus of the meeting was mainly on finances and quality monitoring of our programs. Regarding educational quality, I want to start by thanking everyone who has contributed to this work. This year, we\u2019ve implemented a new system for quality monitoring, which has allowed us to place greater emphasis on supervision, study environments, and progress tracking in third-cycle education. I see this as a very positive development, as we know these factors significantly impact the success of our doctoral programs. Next year, we\u2019ll place more emphasis on following up on third-cycle level courses, where we still have room to improve. We continue to see that not enough courses are being offered to our doctoral students, so I\u2019d like to encourage you to register the FU courses you plan to offer this spring\u2014the deadline for this is November 11.<\/p>\n<p>During discussions with the president about our first and second-cycle education, it became clear that most areas are running smoothly and that the quality of our education remains high. However, we\u2019ve noticed a decline in attractiveness in some areas, and it\u2019s crucial that we get moving on reviewing and renewing our program portfolio\u2014a process that\u2019s already underway. To effectively deliver relevant and high-quality education in the future, we need to take a holistic approach, focusing not only on individual courses and programs but also on our entire range of offerings and work processes. This development effort will involve many of us, and your energy and expertise will be essential.<\/p>\n<p>The efforts we\u2019ve made to improve our finances are starting to pay off clearly in our forecasts and results! After two years of significant losses, it looks like we\u2019ve finally reversed this unfortunate trend. Of course, this didn\u2019t happen on its own. The improvement is thanks to all the hard work at the school to bring the budget back into balance. I particularly want to highlight the work done to increase the \u201cTAK amount,\u201d which has led to a substantial rise in student numbers in our programs and courses. The efforts around course budgeting have also helped align costs with the revenue received. We\u2019ve also secured significantly more externally funded projects, which is a direct result of the effort and time many colleagues have invested in writing applications. Additionally, we\u2019ve managed to bring our premises costs back down to levels we had a few years ago, despite the outrageous rent increases from Akademiska Hus in recent years. We\u2019re not out of the woods yet, but overall, the financial outlook is promising.
