{"id":1321,"date":"2025-02-12T13:55:43","date_gmt":"2025-02-12T12:55:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kth.se\/blogs\/itm-management\/?p=1321"},"modified":"2025-02-12T13:56:05","modified_gmt":"2025-02-12T12:56:05","slug":"skies-are-clearing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kth.se\/blogs\/itm-management\/2025\/02\/skies-are-clearing\/","title":{"rendered":"Skies are clearing"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"post-content-wrapper\"><p>In English further down.<\/p>\n<h2>Nu ljusnar det<\/h2>\n<p>Sakta b\u00f6rjar dagarna bli lite l\u00e4ngre och man kan \u00e4ntligen konstatera att det inte \u00e4r alldeles m\u00f6rkt n\u00e4r man tar sig till och fr\u00e5n KTH. \u00c4ven p\u00e5 det ekonomiska planet b\u00f6rjar det se lite ljusare ut p\u00e5 ITM-skolan. Efter n\u00e5gra \u00e5r med ganska stora ekonomiska underskott ser vi att v\u00e5rt ekonomiska resultat f\u00f6r 2024 hamnade ovanf\u00f6r nollstrecket. Denna f\u00f6rb\u00e4ttring \u00e4r resultatet av allas anstr\u00e4ngningar att effektivisera undervisningsinsatser och lokalutnyttjande och ett omfattande &#8211; och framg\u00e5ngsrikt &#8211; arbete att dra in extern forskningsfinansiering. N\u00e4sta steg blir att forts\u00e4tta p\u00e5 den inslagna v\u00e4gen och successivt skapa en stabil situation som till\u00e5ter oss att g\u00f6ra satsningar fram\u00e5t. ITM-skolan har i m\u00e5nga avseenden g\u00e5tt f\u00f6re de \u00f6vriga skolorna i arbetet mot en ekonomi i balans och jag vill i detta sammanhang tacka alla som med sina insatser bidragit till att \u00f6ka int\u00e4kter och minska kostnader.<\/p>\n<p>Jag har just haft f\u00f6rm\u00e5nen att undervisa om f\u00f6rfattarskap f\u00f6r v\u00e5ra nya doktorander i skolans gemensamma introduktionskurs. Det \u00e4r alltid lika sp\u00e4nnande att f\u00e5 en m\u00f6jlighet att l\u00e4ra sig mer om den sp\u00e4nnande forskning som bedrivs p\u00e5 v\u00e5ra olika institutioner. Den h\u00e4r terminen ges kursen f\u00f6r fj\u00e4rde g\u00e5ngen. \u00c4ven antalet nyantagningar till v\u00e5r forskarutbildning ser nu ut att ligga p\u00e5 en bra och stabil niv\u00e5 efter den kraftiga minskning vi upplevde just efter pandemin. Flera av v\u00e5ra doktorsprogram har uppdaterat sina allm\u00e4nna studieplaner, och i dessa finns nu ett antal gemensamma komponenter som f\u00f6rhoppningsvis kommer att ha positiva effekter f\u00f6r v\u00e5ra doktorander. F\u00f6rutom att inneh\u00e5lla en obligatorisk gemensam introduktionskurs har nu samtliga doktorsprogram samma omfattning p\u00e5 utbildningens kursdel (60hp). Det finns \u00e4ven i alla program obligatoriska seminarier d\u00e4r doktoranderna f\u00f6rv\u00e4ntas presentera sina planer och sin progress i arbetet med avhandlingen. Syftet med seminarierna \u00e4r att g\u00f6ra doktorandernas arbete mer synligt och att kunna identifiera eventuella problem p\u00e5 ett tidigt stadium och p\u00e5 s\u00e5 s\u00e4tt undvika on\u00f6diga problem och f\u00f6rseningar.<\/p>\n<p>P\u00e5 initiativ av skolans fakultetsn\u00e4mnd kommer vi i \u00e5r att unders\u00f6ka hur vi kan f\u00f6rb\u00e4ttra v\u00e5r forskarutbildning ytterligare. H\u00e4r \u00e4r vi beroende av input fr\u00e5n s\u00e5v\u00e4l doktorander som handledare. Alla handledare kommer att bjudas in till skolgemensamma m\u00f6ten om detta, med start nu i mars. Vi hoppas att m\u00e5nga tar m\u00f6jligheten att delta och bidra till framtida f\u00f6rb\u00e4ttringar. Jag ser ocks\u00e5 fram emot att KTH inom kort kommer att genomf\u00f6ra en ny doktorandenk\u00e4t f\u00f6r att p\u00e5 s\u00e5 s\u00e4tt f\u00e5 en uppdaterad och tydlig bild av styrkor och svagheter i v\u00e5r forskarutbildning. Den nya enk\u00e4tunders\u00f6kningen har tagits fram tillsammans med THS. \u00c4ven jag har bidragit till utformningen av enk\u00e4ten och jag tror att den kommer att ge oss mycket anv\u00e4ndbar information. Som alltid med enk\u00e4ter \u00e4r v\u00e4rdet helt beroende av att vi f\u00e5r tillr\u00e4ckligt h\u00f6g svarsfrekvens s\u00e5 jag vill slutligen uppmuntra alla doktorander att avs\u00e4tta de minuter som beh\u00f6vs f\u00f6r att svara p\u00e5 fr\u00e5gorna.<\/p>\n<p>\/Mats Magnusson, vice skolchef p\u00e5 ITM<\/p>\n<h2>Skies are clearing<\/h2>\n<p>As the days slowly grow longer, it&#8217;s finally noticeable that it&#8217;s not completely dark when arriving at or leaving KTH. And just as the daylight lingers a little more, the financial outlook at the ITM School is also brightening. After several years of significant deficits, our financial results for 2024 have finally landed above zero. This improvement is thanks to everyone&#8217;s efforts in streamlining teaching, optimizing space utilization, and successfully attracting external research funding. The next step is to build on this momentum and gradually establish a stable financial foundation that enables future investments. In many respects, the ITM School has been ahead of other schools in working toward a balanced economy. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone whose efforts have contributed to increasing income and reducing costs.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, I had the privilege of teaching academic writing to our new PhD students as part of the School\u2019s joint introductory course. It\u2019s always inspiring to gain insight into the exciting research happening across our departments. This semester marks the fourth time the course is being offered- Also, admissions to our doctoral programs seem to have stabilized after the sharp decline following the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Several of our doctoral programs have recently updated their general study plans, incorporating new common components aimed at benefiting our PhD students. In addition to a mandatory introductory course, all programs now have a standardized 60-credit coursework requirement. Furthermore, all doctoral programs now include mandatory seminars, where PhD students present their research plans and progress. These seminars are intended to make doctoral research more visible and to identify potential challenges early, helping to prevent unnecessary delays.<\/p>\n<p>As part of a Faculty Board initiative, we are also exploring how we can further improve our doctoral education. This will be a collaborative effort, requiring input from both doctoral students and supervisors. To facilitate this, we will host school-wide meetings for supervisors, starting in March, and we hope many will participate and share their perspectives. Additionally, KTH will soon launch a new doctoral student survey, developed in collaboration with THS, to provide an updated and comprehensive view of our PhD education\u2019s strengths and areas for improvement. I have been involved in designing the survey, and I believe it will provide valuable insights.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, as with any survey, its value depends on a high response rate.
