Det h\u00e4r \u00e4r en av de mest intensiva perioderna under \u00e5ret, eftersom vi m\u00e5ste avsluta viktiga saker innan vi kan njuta av semestern. Jag \u00e4r s\u00e4ker p\u00e5 att alla l\u00e4rare r\u00e4ttar s\u00e5v\u00e4l tentor som kandidat- och masteruppsatser. Jag vet ocks\u00e5 att administrationen redan nu b\u00f6rjar planera f\u00f6r uppstarten av verksamheten efter sommaren.<\/p>\n<p>Ekonomi i balans \u2013 det verkar som om de senaste \u00e5rens kamp mot den ekonomiska situationen \u00e4ntligen har b\u00f6rjat betala sig! Efter att ha tittat p\u00e5 resultaten efter \u00e5rets f\u00f6rsta fyra m\u00e5nader st\u00e5r det klart att ITM har en just balanserad ekonomi. Vi har ett positivt resultat p\u00e5 12 miljoner kronor. Det \u00e4r v\u00e5r \u00f6vertygelse att det kommer att h\u00e5lla i sig och att vi kan avsluta \u00e5ret med ett positivt resultat (prognosen: 24 miljoner kronor, men ov\u00e4ntade saker kan h\u00e4nda under h\u00f6sten). Tv\u00e5 viktiga parametrar bidrar till att vi \u00e4r h\u00e4r idag, n\u00e4mligen att v\u00e5ra forskare framg\u00e5ngsrikt har \u00f6kat forskningsuppdragen och att vi har minskat ytan f\u00f6r kontor och laboratorier. H\u00e4r vill jag verkligen tacka er alla f\u00f6r era anstr\u00e4ngningar att hj\u00e4lpa till att f\u00f6rb\u00e4ttra den ekonomiska situationen. Jag vill ocks\u00e5 s\u00e4ga att ITM:s ledning \u00e4r medveten om problem med f\u00f6rs\u00e4mrad ventilation nu n\u00e4r vi \u00e4r fler p\u00e5 mindre yta. Vi arbetar p\u00e5 att l\u00f6sa detta tillsammans med KTH.<\/p>\n<p>Vi hade v\u00e5rt sista fakultetsn\u00e4mndsm\u00f6te f\u00f6re sommaren den 9 juni i Saltsj\u00f6baden. Som vanligt hade vi en fullsp\u00e4ckad agenda d\u00e4r vi behandlade anst\u00e4llningar, kurser, program, en plan f\u00f6r studentengagemang, etc. H\u00e4r vill jag s\u00e4rskilt p\u00e5minna om att fakultetsn\u00e4mnden \u00e4r ansvarig f\u00f6r kvalitetsfr\u00e5gor inklusive anst\u00e4llning av l\u00e4rare och utn\u00e4mning av docenter. Sedan januari ska alla nyanst\u00e4llningar av l\u00e4rare att g\u00e5 fr\u00e5n ITM:s ledningsgrupp till ITM:s fackliga grupp och slutligen till fakultetsn\u00e4mnden. Observera att det \u00e4r prefekten eller en enhetschef som presenterar den nya fakultetsanst\u00e4llningen vid alla tre tillf\u00e4llena. P\u00e5 s\u00e5 s\u00e4tt f\u00e5r institutionen v\u00e4rdefull feedback fr\u00e5n olika grupper, vilket f\u00f6rb\u00e4ttrar kvaliteten p\u00e5 dokumentationen. Deltagarna delades in i tv\u00e5 grupper som skulle vara bes\u00e4ttning f\u00f6r kaptenerna. De flesta av oss hade ingen eller mycket liten erfarenhet av segling, s\u00e5 vi fick l\u00e4ra oss mycket av v\u00e5ra kaptener. Personligen hade jag ingen aning om alla de intressanta tekniska detaljer som man m\u00e5ste h\u00e5lla reda p\u00e5 n\u00e4r man seglar. Jag kommer s\u00e4kert att prova det h\u00e4r igen i framtiden!<\/p>\n<p>Sommaren \u00e4r den mest sp\u00e4nnande tiden p\u00e5 \u00e5ret f\u00f6r en hobbytr\u00e4dg\u00e5rdsm\u00e4stare som jag. I \u00e5r har jag h\u00e4mtat inspiration fr\u00e5n Peru n\u00e4r jag skulle v\u00e4lja ut ett sommarprojekt. Jag hittade den intressanta v\u00e4xten yakonplantan, som jag har b\u00f6rjat odla. Jag tror att jag kommer att vara en av de f\u00e5 i Sverige som odlar denna sp\u00e4nnande v\u00e4xt, men jag \u00e4r inte b\u00e4st. Du kan till exempel titta p\u00e5 den h\u00e4r videon fr\u00e5n Omberg, som ger dig ett exempel p\u00e5 hur man odlar yakon:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6YRMViqzgzg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Odla yacon &#8211; roten med sp\u00e4nnande egenskaper (se p\u00e5 YouTube)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jag \u00f6nskar er alla en riktigt sk\u00f6n sommar!<\/p>\n<p>P\u00e4r J\u00f6nsson, skolchef, ITM<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"editor-h2\">Successfully riding out the economic storm at ITM, changing leadership at sea, and getting inspiration from Peru in the home garden<\/h2>\n<p>Dear colleagues,<\/p>\n<p>We have reached the end of the spring semester. This is one of the most intensive periods during the year, since we need to finish important things before we can enjoy a vacation. I am sure that all teachers are correcting the exams and the Bachelor and Master Theses being presented. I also know that the administration already starts to plan the start-up of the activities after the summer.<\/p>\n<p>A balanced economy \u2013 it seems as the last years struggle to battle the economic situation finally has started to pay off! After looking at the results after the first four months of the year, it is clear that ITM has reached a balanced economy. We have a positive result of 12 million SEK. Furthermore, it is our strong feeling is that this situation will hold and that we can end the year with a positive result (the prognosis: 24 million SEK, but unexpected things might happen during the fall). We can see two important reasons for reaching this situation, namely that our researchers successfully have increased the research contracts and we have decreased the area for offices and laboratories. Here, I really wish to thank all of you for your efforts in assisting in improving the economic situation. However, I also wish to say that the ITM leadership are aware of that some issues with a worsen ventilation has occurred when we have decreased the office space. We are working on solving this together with KTH.<\/p>\n<p>We had our last faculty board meeting before the summer on June 9 in Saltsj\u00f6baden. As usual, we had a busy agenda where we handled faculty hiring, courses, programs, a plan for student engagement, etc. Here, I want to especially remind you of that the faculty board is responsible for quality issues including hiring of faculty and appointing of Docents. Since January, all new faculty hirings will pass from the ITM management group to the ITM trade union group, and finally to the faculty board. Note, that it is the department head or a unit leader that presents the new faculty position at all three occasions. Therefore, the department will get valuable feedback from different groups which improves the quality of the documentation. Pelle Lundqvist and Mattias Wiggberg had organized two sail boats, where they served as captains. The participants were divided into two groups that were assigned one of the captains. Most of us did not have a great, or any, experience of sailing, so we had to learn a lot from our captains. Personally, I had no idea of all the interesting technical details one needs to keep track when sailing. I will for sure try this again in the future!<\/p>\n<p>Summer is the most exciting time of the year for a <em>hobby gardener<\/em> as myself. This year I have obtained inspiration from Peru when selecting a summer project. I found the interesting plant: the yakon plant, which I started to grow.
