Vad uppn\u00e5dde vi under 2020? Vad l\u00e4rde vi oss av de nya utmaningarna? Vilken samh\u00e4llsnytta eller fotavtryck levererade vi? Vad ska vi f\u00f6rb\u00e4ttra till n\u00e4sta \u00e5r? Hatef Madani, Impactansvarig f\u00f6r ITM, s\u00e4tter p\u00e5 sig sina impact-glas\u00f6gon och reflekterar \u00f6ver ett speciellt \u00e5r.<\/div>\n<div class=\"lead lead-paragraph\">\n<p>N\u00e4r det g\u00e4ller samh\u00e4llsnytta fr\u00e5n v\u00e5rt professionella arbete \u00e4r utmaningen alltid att definiera korrekta nyckeltal (KPIs eller Key Performance Indicators). Vad k\u00e4nnetecknar en forskargrupp som har stor p\u00e5verkan inom sitt \u00e4mnesomr\u00e5de? Hur kan vi m\u00e4ta v\u00e5r forskargrupps resultat p\u00e5 ett standardiserat s\u00e4tt (om det finns n\u00e5got)?<\/p>\n<p>Hur kan vi utforma strategier f\u00f6r att fr\u00e4mja outreach och f\u00f6rb\u00e4ttra v\u00e5r p\u00e5verkan bortom v\u00e5ra begr\u00e4nsade forskargrupper? Det \u00e4r sv\u00e5ra fr\u00e5gor att besvara och jag tror inte att det finns n\u00e5gra enkla svar om r\u00e4tt och fel. Flera institut har satsat mycket p\u00e5 att utveckla standardiserade metoder f\u00f6r att j\u00e4mf\u00f6ra universitetens akademiska resultat och rangordna universitet fr\u00e5n hela v\u00e4rlden baserat p\u00e5 dessa metoder. THE (Times Higher Education), QS (Quacquarelli Symonds), ARWU (Shanghai) \u00e4r f\u00f6rmodligen de mest k\u00e4nda exemplen p\u00e5 de s\u00e5 kallade universella akademiska rankningssystemen. De har satt upp flera nyckeltal f\u00f6r att m\u00e4ta universitetens resultat globalt. Bland dessa nyckeltal spelar anseende (bland akademiska institutioner och arbetsgivare) och vetenskaplig publicering centrala roller.<\/p>\n<p>Strax f\u00f6re sommaren fick jag i uppdrag att unders\u00f6ka hur vi som ITM-forskare kan bidra till en h\u00f6gre ranking f\u00f6r KTH i de universella rankningssystemen. Det var intressant att p\u00e5 djupet g\u00e5 igenom nyckeltal p\u00e5 ITM och se hur varje institution presterar. F\u00f6r oss alla finns det mycket att l\u00e4ra av den h\u00e4r lilla \u00f6vningen och min ambition \u00e4r att vi tillsammans granskar resultaten och l\u00e4r oss mer om v\u00e5ra styrkor och svagheter. Det kan leda till smarta strategier f\u00f6r att utvecklas. Till exempel:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hur mycket vikt l\u00e4gger vi p\u00e5 kvantitet snarare \u00e4n kvalitet vid vetenskaplig publicering? Varifr\u00e5n kom detta beslut?<\/li>\n<li>\u00c4r vi v\u00e4linformerade om de b\u00e4sta vetenskapliga tidskrifterna inom v\u00e5rt \u00e4mnesomr\u00e5de? Vet vi hur vi kan \u00f6ka v\u00e5r forskningsimpact genom att publicera p\u00e5 r\u00e4tt plats vid r\u00e4tt tidpunkt?<\/li>\n<li>Vilka \u00e4r de viktigaste nyckeltalen som passar v\u00e5r forskningsstil? Hur v\u00e4l kommuniceras dessa nyckeltal mellan fakulteterna och ledningen?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Listan kan g\u00f6ras l\u00e5ng. Att hitta svar p\u00e5 denna ofullst\u00e4ndiga fr\u00e5gelista kan sprida ljus i denna m\u00f6rka tid p\u00e5 \u00e5ret, sj\u00e4lvklart med adventsljusen t\u00e4nda och med nyheterna om ett corona-vaccin i f\u00e4rskt minne. Njut av den h\u00e4r mysiga tiden p\u00e5 \u00e5ret!<\/p>\n<p>\/Hatef Madani, Impact-ansvarig p\u00e5 ITM-skolan<\/p>\n<h2>KPIs for higher societal impact<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"lead lead-paragraph\">We are getting close to end of the year and it\u2019s time to deal with the self-reflection process\u2019 questions: What did we achieve during 2020? How much did we learn from the new challenges? What was our impact or footprint? What to improve next year? As Impact Leader of ITM, Hatef Madani, puts on his impact glasses when reflecting on a special year.<\/div>\n<p>When it comes to the societal impact of our professional work, the challenge is always to define proper KPIs, Key Performance Indicators. What can define a research group as a high impact one in the subject area? How can we measure the performance of our research group in a standard way (if there is any)?<\/p>\n<p>How can we devise strategies to foster growth and enhance our impact beyond our limited research groups? \u00a0It is hard to answer this type of question indeed and I believe that there is no solely right answer to it. \u00a0Several institutions put a lot of efforts to develop standardized methods to compare the academic performance of universities and rank the universities from all over the world based on those methods. THE (Times Higher Education), QS (Quacquarelli Symonds), ARWU (Shanghai) are probably the most well-known examples of those so called universal academic ranking systems.\u00a0 They set several KPIs to measure the performance of the universities globally. Among those KPIs, the reputation (among academic institutions and employers) and scientific publication play a pivotal role.<\/p>\n<p>Right before summer holidays, I was assigned to investigate how we as ITM researchers can contribute more to a \u201chigher-ranked\u201d KTH in the universal ranking systems. It was quite interesting to go deeply through the KPIs for all the departments at ITM and see how each department performs. There are a lot to learn from this small exercise for all of us and our ambition is to go through this exercise all together and learn more about our strengths and weaknesses. That can lead to smart strategies for advancement. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How much do we weigh the quantity rather than the quality of our scientific publications? Where was this decision originated from?<\/li>\n<li>Are we well-informed about the best scientific journals in our subject area? Do we know how to increase our research impact by publishing in the right place and right time?<\/li>\n<li>What are the Key Performance Indicators that fit our research style? How well are these KPIs communicated between the faculties and management?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The list can easily get long. Finding answers to this non exhaustive list of questions might bring more light to this dark time of the year, of course beside the Advent candles and News about vaccines.
