Ask the workshop!

The workshop at Machine Design is the heart of innovation and supports both research and education. Over the years, people who have worked here serve as a bridge between theory and practice. During my own time as a student, I had a lot of respect for those who were responsible for the workshop at Machine Design at the time. They made the student projects we worked on more real. These people serve as the last step in a long product development chain, the final verification that the idea holds. One of my first impressions of the workshop was when I submitted drawings for some kind of gear that I had designed in a project. The person who was responsible for the workshop received the drawing and said: “So, how do you expect us to do this? Drill square holes? ”.

Last week we celebrated Tomas Östberg’s last day at work. He’s been responsible for Machine Design’s workshop for the past ten years and is now retiring after a total of 48 years at KTH. Tomas has built rigs for research experiments and prototypes for student projects.

Nowadays Tomas talks about replacing labs with simulations, we work more and more with studies of phenomena and less of verification and validation. It is not always as important to take the leap from drawing to a product, from idea and concept to a physical model.

When Tomas now retires, I think that perhaps this is the last step that is the core of being a technical university. If we are not able to take the last step in a product development chain, to verify a product, to develop a physical prototype, to realize an idea, then I’m, not sure we are worth calling ourselves a technical university. Maybe a theoretical university. The difference between these may lie in the concept of engineering (think Science and Art). And today I also think of the teaching efforts done by Tomas and his colleagues have done at KTH during these years – and all the other students who like me tried to drill square holes.

/Martin Edin Grimheden, Head of the Department of Machine Design

In English further down.
