For many of us, the pandemic has meant new ways of teaching and meeting. Today it’s easier to assess the pros and cons of teleworking. In the longer term, the pandemic most certainly leads us to change how we dispose of our working hours and the spaces available on campus for teaching, meetings, and experiments.

With the new insights, I hope we’ll find suitable combinations and ways to work to become more efficient and creative, at the same time as we have time for other parts of our lives. This applies not least to our doctoral students who occasionally experience a high workload and who during the pandemic often have been more lonely and isolated than usual.

Regaining routines in everyday life can in many cases support motivation and work pace. But even more important is of course, the social part of the work, something many of us have missed. I look forward to solving simple questions about teaching and research quickly and easily in the office or during joint coffee breaks and lunches instead of having to book a zoom meeting. It will also be nice to share ideas in front of a physical whiteboard instead of using virtual post-its.

Individual study plans

In addition, I would like to address a number of current topics that concern our doctoral education. Recently, I saw the results of an internal audit of the ISP system (system for individual study plans). It points to a number of things that can be improved. Among other things, it is clear that we can improve both by developing our doctoral students’ first individual study plan and updating them regularly. With relatively limited efforts, we could also improve the information in the study plans.

On the other hand, we have become significantly better at using the ISP system since it was digitized. But – the digital ISP system still has its shortcomings, which is one reason why it is not always used as expected. However, ISPs are important for making focus, expectations and responsibilities clear. System deficiencies are not a valid excuse to ignore them. Instead, I want to encourage both supervisors and doctoral students to make suggestions on how the system can be improved.

International guests

Another sign that life is returning to normal is the fact we can look forward to having international colleagues on-site again as guest researchers. In this context, I would like to remind you that it is time to design positions for CSC fellows. This applies to the CSC doctoral students who enrol at KTH, where some co-financing is required, and to Chinese guest researchers and guest doctoral students who want to spend a shorter time at KTH and where there is no requirement for funding from KTH. As soon as the global spread of covid-19 subsides, I hope that we can benefit from new and more flexible work forms in terms of increased collaboration with international colleagues, more incoming researchers, and more frequent stays at foreign universities.

/ Mats Magnusson, Director of Third-Cycle Education at the ITM School

Photo: Kaleidico on Unsplash
