Engagerade doktorander p\u00e5 konferens<\/h2>\n

Den 24-25 november genomf\u00f6rde vi ITM-skolans doktorandkonferens f\u00f6r f\u00f6rsta g\u00e5ngen p\u00e5 drygt tv\u00e5 \u00e5r. 39 entusiastiska och diskussionslystna doktorander deltog och m\u00e5nga inslag kretsade kring skrivande, f\u00f6rfattarskap och etik. Ett stort tack till Ulf Sandstr\u00f6m (Indek) och Anders W\u00e4ndahl (KTH Bibliotek) f\u00f6r v\u00e4rdefull information om f\u00f6rfattarskap respektive journalval. Det var uppenbart att kunskapen om Vancouverprotokollet och andra riktlinjer f\u00f6r f\u00f6rfattarskap fortfarande inte \u00e4r tillr\u00e4ckligt spridd p\u00e5 KTH. Och \u00e4ven om det inte finns ett allm\u00e4ngiltigt r\u00e4ttvist s\u00e4tt att hantera f\u00f6rfattarskap s\u00e5 \u00e4r det tydligt att vi beh\u00f6ver diskutera de olika normer och praktiker som finns.<\/p>\n

Ett annat omr\u00e5de som tarvar mer uppm\u00e4rksamhet \u00e4r journalval, och d\u00e5 i synnerhet hur vi undviker rovtidskrifter (predatory journals). Vissa journaler som vi p\u00e5 KTH publicerar ganska mycket i , t. ex. \u201dSustainability\u201d klassas nu som m\u00f6jlig rovjournal enligt den officiella norska journalklassificeringen. Uppenbarligen beh\u00f6ver vi ta tag i dessa diskussioner, i v\u00e5r forskarutbildning och p\u00e5 bred front.<\/p>\n

Ett annat inslag som gjorde stort intryck var Josefin Sundins (SLU) personliga och omskakande ber\u00e4ttelse om visselbl\u00e5sning och vetenskaplig ohederlighet. Det stod klart f\u00f6r oss alla att vetenskaplig ohederlighet \u00e4r ett betydligt mer utbrett fenomen \u00e4n vad vi anat och att de mekanismer f\u00f6r att hantera denna typ av fusk p\u00e5 svenska l\u00e4ros\u00e4ten inte alltid fungerat. Ett ljus i m\u00f6rkret \u00e4r inr\u00e4ttandet av en oberoende n\u00e4mnd f\u00f6r pr\u00f6vning av oredlighet i forskning. Den kommer f\u00f6rhoppningsvis g\u00f6ra det l\u00e4ttare att tv\u00e4tta denna byk p\u00e5 ett neutralt och transparent s\u00e4tt, till skillnad fr\u00e5n att tysta ned problem p\u00e5 l\u00e4ros\u00e4ten f\u00f6r skydda deras rykte.<\/p>\n

\u00c4ven Hatef Madanis (Energiteknik) energiska och entusiasmerande inl\u00e4gg om forskningens p\u00e5verkan utanf\u00f6r akademin, impact, var h\u00f6gst uppskattat och understr\u00f6k tydligt vikten av att vi redan i ett tidigt skede beaktar effekterna av v\u00e5r forskning och l\u00e4gger kraft p\u00e5 att kommunicera hur den p\u00e5verkar olika avn\u00e4mare och samh\u00e4llet i stort.<\/p>\n

Det var ocks\u00e5 gl\u00e4djande att v\u00e5ra programansvariga doktorander (PAD:ar) var v\u00e4l representerade p\u00e5 konferensen och aktivt bidrog med information om s\u00e5v\u00e4l studentk\u00e5rens arbete som doktoranders ansvar och skyldigheter. Mohammad Abuasbeh (Ordf\u00f6rande f\u00f6r ITM PhD Student Council) <\/em>presenterade ocks\u00e5 resultaten fr\u00e5n ITM:s doktorandenk\u00e4t. Som FA \u00e4r jag v\u00e4ldigt tacksam f\u00f6r denna insats d\u00e5 resultaten \u00e4r till stor hj\u00e4lp f\u00f6r att identifiera och prioritera f\u00f6rb\u00e4ttringsomr\u00e5den f\u00f6r v\u00e5r forskarutbildning. Resultaten \u00e4r inte p\u00e5 n\u00e5got s\u00e4tt alarmerande och g\u00e5r i linje med tidigare genomf\u00f6rda enk\u00e4ter. Men vi m\u00e5ste forts\u00e4tta f\u00f6rb\u00e4ttra och utveckla handledarkompetens, \u00f6ka kursutbudet och tillse att doktorandernas arbetssituation i alla avseenden \u00e4r h\u00e5llbar.<\/p>\n

Jag vill avslutningsvis ocks\u00e5 lyfta fram doktorandernas forskningspresentationer som en av konferensens absoluta h\u00f6jdpunkter. Kvaliteten p\u00e5 utst\u00e4llda posters var mycket god men det som fr\u00e4mst gjorde intryck var doktorandernas nyfikenhet p\u00e5 forskningen fr\u00e5n andra institutioner. F\u00f6rhoppningsvis kan denna typ av utbyten inte bara bredda v\u00e5r kunskap utan ocks\u00e5 leda till nya kontakter och i f\u00f6rl\u00e4ngningen \u00e4ven nya gr\u00e4ns\u00f6verskridande forskningssamarbeten.<\/p>\n

Enthusiastic PhDs on conference<\/h2>\n

On November 24-25, we arranged the ITM school’s PhD conference for the first time in over two years. Thirty-nine enthusiastic and discussion-seeking doctoral students participated, and writing, authorship and ethics were common themes. A big thanks to Ulf Sandstr\u00f6m (INDEK) and Anders W\u00e4ndahl (KTH Library) for valuable information about authorship and journal selection. Obviously, knowledge about the Vancouver Protocol and other guidelines for authorship is still not sufficiently widespread at KTH. And even if there is no universal, fair way of dealing with authorship, it is clear that we need to discuss the various norms and practices that exist.<\/p>\n

Another area that needs more attention is journal selection, particularly how we avoid predatory journals. According to the official Norwegian journal classification, some journals that KTH researchers publish quite a lot in, e.g. “Sustainability”, are now classified as a possible predator journal. We need to address these discussions in our doctoral education and other contexts.<\/p>\n

Another feature that made a great impression was Josefin Sundin’s (SLU) personal and shocking story about whistleblowing and scientific dishonesty. It was clear to all of us that scientific dishonesty is much more widespread than we imagined and that the mechanisms for dealing with this type of cheating at Swedish universities did not always work correctly. A light in this dark is the establishment of an independent committee for the examination of misconduct in research. Hopefully, it will enable to clean up the mess in a neutral and transparent way and counteract universities who try to hide problems to protect their reputation.<\/p>\n

Hatef Madani’s (Energy Technology) energetic and enthusiastic presentation about impact was also highly appreciated. He emphasized the importance of considering the effects of our research and communicating how it affects different stakeholders and society at large \u2013 already at an early stage in the research.<\/p>\n

It was also gratifying that our programme responsible students (PADs) were well represented at the conference and actively contributed with information about the student union’s work and the doctoral students’ responsibilities and obligations. Mohammad Abuasbeh (Chairperson of the ITM PhD Student Council)<\/em> also presented results from a recent survey among ITM’s doctoral students. As an FA, I am grateful for this effort as the results are very helpful in identifying and prioritizing areas for improvement for our doctoral education. The results were in no way alarming and are in line with previous surveys. Still, \u00a0we need to keep improving and developing the supervisor competence, increase the range of courses and ensure that doctoral students’ work situation is sustainable in all aspects.<\/p>\n

In conclusion, I would like to highlight the doctoral students’ research presentations as one of the conference’s absolute highlights. The quality of exhibited posters was excellent, but what mainly impressed me was the doctoral students’ curiosity about research from other departments. Hopefully, this type of exchange can broaden our knowledge and lead to new contacts and, in the long run, new cross-sector research collaborations.<\/p>\n
