Some of the highlights to come

New year, new decade, new opportunities. Here are a small selection of exciting events coming up in 2020, that will generate new knowledge and help develop KTH in both the short and the long term.

In the coming week, the new term will be upon us and everyone will be back at work with a bang and I will welcome the sight of a busy campus again. The fact that the KTH Centre for Cyber Defence and Information Security (CDIS) has now been officially opened and our partnership with the Swedish Armed Forces is taking shape feels very timely.

It’s going to be exciting to see our major research investment in digitalisation, KTH Digital Futures, gain further momentum. The breadth, span and innovativeness of our research will help us shoulder a big responsibility in the development of digitalisation within all sectors of society.

I am really looking forward to THE Innovation and Impact Summit 2020  22-24 April.  Issues that are highly relevant for our future will be aired and discussed with the focus on innovations and their role in promoting sustainable development.

Continuously striving for, measuring and improving the quality of everything we do is something that both stimulates and strengthens KTH. In many cases, quality as a concept becomes incredibly clear and specific – not simply a word that sounds good on the page. In spring, probably in March, the Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) will publish its audit report on the KTH system for auditing the quality of its study programmes.  The internal spotlight will then switch to our research that is to be quality assessed via our third Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2020. With input from top international researchers and self-assessments, our research will be seen and reflected, which will drive quality. Here, I am looking forward to hearing proposals from experts concerning measures that can enhance quality and enable scope for renewal.

I´m also looking forward to KTH’s participation in Expo 2020 in October. The World Expo  is being held in Dubai with the motto Connecting minds, creating the future.

But, perhaps, just as important when it comes to quality as the events listed above, is the work that is done on an everyday basis within the whole of KTH.

I hope that you, like me, are looking forward to all the opportunities the new year has to offer.
