How to Find a Walking Trail in Stockholm

Walking and nature are the two of my most favorite things. Stockholm is giving me the pleasure of doing those two at the same time by having so many forest nearby the city. With the SL card (Stockholm’s transportation card) we have access to so many forest and walking trail in the city. Today, I will talk about some way to find walking trail in Stockholm.

Internet Search

Obviously, right. The first time I wanted to know about walking trail in Stockholm, I googled “Walking trail Stockholm”. But the result is not as compact as I wanted. It give me website to start but I need to dig in some more to get what I want. So I don’t recommend this method.

Hiking and Trail Community

There are three big community for walking and hiking in Sweden, they are Sörmlandsleden, Upplandsleden and Roslagsleden. Upplandsleden is covering southern part of Sweden, like Enköping and surrounding. So they are outside of Stockholm. While Roslagsleden cover Roslagen area, like 100km north of Stockholm. We can still go there for free, because there are few bus going north that still accept Stockholm SL card. But I love Sörmlandsleden! Most of their route is in Stockholm’s forest. They divide long track into many sections, each distanced 6-12km. The website will explain where we start and end, but to be able to see the real map, you have to be registered in their community. We required to pay some amount of money to be able to be registered. Well I didn’t do this. The name of the area of start is enough to get me started. Maybe later when I got a good job, because I would love to help the community grow and take care of the trails.

Once you are in their trail, you will be able to see colored mark on the trees. Sörmlandsleden’s mark is orange.

Set Your Own Trail

When my random side went out, I do not follow any trail and try to create my own. For me, there are few things I need on my tracks. First, it needs to have at least 50% forest area. The rest of it, sometimes it is good to have parks, or summer houses to see. Second, I want at least a lake or a river on my route. Lake will make the walk not boring with only forest. Third, that it is covered in the SL transportation so I can go there for free. And the last thing is that I will end up in a good road with a bus stop. We don’t want to end the track in the middle of nowhere, evening, and no bus. So there go four of the requirements. Forest area, water, SL card access, and end with bus stop.

Knowing this, you can just open google map and find that kind of place. Yesterday I get this trail of Gömmaren using this method. Last week I find a beautiful route of Tullinge also using this method. For example, let us see this map near my area in Bredäng.

The first thing I see is the forest with a lake in the center of the map. “This looks good, forest and lake, accessible by SL. So how do I get there and what should be a good exit point?” I ask myself. From that map, I will coming from north. So the closest tunnelbana (Stockholm’s subway) station is Vårby Gård. I zoom in and check if there are roads to inside the forest.

From this map we see there are only one thin grey line. That will be forest’s road. That will be what we want to walk on. But even though we only saw one in Google map, we will see so many more road inside the forest. We will not run out of them.

So now, a good exit point. After finding out that this track is around 5 kilometers, which is not that long, I try my usual method, by opposing. Starting from west, I plan to finish in the east.

So good luck trying to find your own trail. Do comment if you have another way or another source for walking trail, or just simply tell me which trail you have tried.

Have fun walking!
