Every year, millions of square meters of functioning buildings are demolished across Europe to make way for speculative new developments. This "demolition-first" culture contributes to 35% of the EU’s total waste and 36% of its CO2 emissions, treating our homes as disposable investments rather than vital social resources. It is a system that while once possibly functional, now has clear reached its expiration date.

To discuss exactly this topic we invite you to a film screening and panel discussion on HouseEurope!´s citizens' initiative, which is fighting to make renovation the new global norm. The film explores the hidden costs of speculation and the urgent need for a "Right to Reuse." By shifting the industry from material-intensive to labor-intensive it suggests, we can preserve our communities, our history, and our planet.

Following the screening, we will host an interdisciplinary panel featuring experts from academia, industry, and the public sector. We will dive into the initiative´s core topics, but also look at how these relate to the situation in Sweden and Stockholm and which other changes are needed to transform the building sector for a sustainable future.

The Panelists:

  • Erik Stenberg (KTH)

  • Tove Sjöberg (ACAN Sverige)

  • Janica Wiklund (Uppsidan)

  • Jonathan Hummelman (Stockholm Stad)

Join us to discuss how radical renovation actually is and how we can build a fairer, more sustainable Europe.
