The Built Environment

How can we live well whilst moving towards net-zero? According to the UN Environment Programme (Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction 2025-2026), the building and construction sector is responsible for 50% of global material extraction whilst making up for 11-13% of global GDP, mainly in engineering, construction, and demolition. A big part of the emissions are associated with the constrcution of a building, i.e., embedded carbon emissions. For instance, concrete and steel require energy intensive processes in order to be produced.

The Speaker

Erik Stenberg is an architect and Associate Professor in Architecture at the KTH School of Architecture and the Built Environment in Stockholm, Sweden. He has been teaching studio and courses in Architecture since 1997, with a special affinity for the foundation level, design processes, and mass housing. During 2021-2026, Erik leads the Swedish part of ReCreate, an EU Horizon 2020-funded research project that focuses on the reuse of prefabricated concrete elements that were not intended for disassembly.

The Talk

This lunch lecture aims at examining the role of pre-cast concrete elements and discussing sustainability aspects of the built environment. Erik will deliver a keynote before the floor is opened up to the participants' questions. The Climate Action Centre aims to create an open and inclusive environment to discuss sustainability.
