Sveriges Ingenjörer awarded nine projects with SEK 50,000 for their potential to address environmental problems and offer insights to science-based, practical solutions.

How can we address future environmental problems in a transdisciplinary approach? For some, the answer lies in blue-green infrastructure in Sweden, whereas others propose to examine industrial symbiosis as an European climate strategy. 

The 2026 application cycle featured a broad spectrum of creative proposals, resulting in the selection of nine standout projects. These finalists were chosen for their rigorous scientific methodology, dedication to environmental sustainability, and focus on climate-positive outcomes. The recipient group reflects a vibrant mix of academic interests and international backgrounds. The KTH Climate Action Centre assisted in the evaluation process, adhering to Sveriges Ingenjörer’s standards of scientific excellence and practical applicability to Sweden’s environmental goals.

Sustainable Tech and Global Resilience

The scholarship projects for 2026 highlight a multifaceted approach to modern environmental issues. A significant portion of the work focuses on technological innovation in energy and tracking, including the use of diffusion-model-based trajectory planning for AUVs to monitor CO2 plumes at offshore sites. Other researchers are refining efficiency by investigating how occupant behavior directly impacts building energy consumption.

Beyond Europe, the projects address global sustainability challenges. This includes identifying barriers and opportunities for a sustainable bioeconomy in Kenya, as well as utilizing advanced satellite imagery and machine learning to classify electricity access across Sub-Saharan Africa. These initiatives reflect a deep-seated drive to find functional solutions for a sustainable future both locally and abroad.
