ScholarGPS has released its annual ranking of the world's researchers. It shows that Professor Emil Björnson at COS has reached first place in Sweden, in all scientific fields, based on research results from the past five years.

There are a variety of international rankings that measure researchers' achievements and impact on the research front. The most prestigious lists measure not only the number of citations, but also take into account the number of author names, the publication tradition in the research field and the proportion of published articles that are well-cited – all in an effort to emphasize quality over quantity.

Professor Emil Björnson at COS has been recognized by Clarivate, the company behind Web of Science, as a Highly Cited Researcher in computer science for the years 2021–2025. Their list contains only 0.1% of the world's researchers. There are about 70 people on the list who are active at Swedish universities, of which Emil is one of two computer scientists.

ScholarGPS publishes lists that compare researchers across different research fields. On the new list for 2025, Emil Björnson has reached first place in Sweden, across all scientific fields, when the impact of research results published in the last five years is measured.

– It was a completely unexpected outcome because there is so much good research happening in Sweden. But it is clear evidence of how my research group is at the forefront of 6G communications and inspires many other researchers to follow our visions for future communication systems.

A contributing factor to the award is the article Massive MIMO is a reality—What is next?: Five promising research directions for antenna arrays  which was published in 2019 and anticipated much of the research that has taken place in the field in recent years.
