Title: Confessions of a Recovering Academic: From Programming Languages to Stories
Abstract
This presentation will cover a fair bit of ground and won’t be exclusively a research presentation. I will talk about the reasons I moved from academia to industry fairly late in my career and what the transition was like. I will talk about what it means to be a Data Scientist at Storytel — particularly since my background was not in Data Science. I’ll give an overview of some of the big data problems we are wrestling with at Storytel, and discuss some of those challenges we face from the perspective of a former Programming Languages researcher.
Bio
Dave Clarke is currently a Data Scientist at Storytel. Before shifting to industry six months ago, Dave had a long and successful academic career, with positions at Uppsala University, KU Leuven, Belgium, and CWI and Utrecht University, in the Netherlands. He obtained his PhD from UNSW, Australia in 2001, which seems like a lifetime ago.
