A data acquisition system to control and operate a Langmuir probe on board the ROMEO satellite from the University of Stuttgart is implemented in this thesis. Langmuir probe is a basic instrument for characterizing space plasma and is a part of a typical space weather payload suite. The Langmuir probe onboard the ROMEO satellite will monitor plasma characteristics in MEO region. The system will endure the harsh radiation MEO conditions using fault-tolerant and radiation-hardened electronics.

The thesis develops the electronic system of the instrument integrating an IP library from Gaisler into in NG-medium NanoXplore radiation-hardened FPGA, and implementing LEON 3 processor. A significant objective of this work is to implement radiation hardened systems using European technology. The system architecture and elements of the design are discussed.
