This presentation discusses unwanted interoperability interactions experienced in the railway power systems. Reported instabilities from the existing literature, along with four case studies with real-world measurements from the Swedish substations are provided. These cases cover converter overloading, low load behavior, load-sharing issues, and Low Frequency Oscillations (LFOs).

Additionally, modelling approaches to railway power systems, namely Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) simulations, RMS simulations, and analytical derivation, are compared under different train/load model cases. The transient and steady-state behavior of Static Frequency Converters (SFCs) controlled as Rotary Frequency Converters (RFCs) in the Swedish railway power system is investigated in accordance with performance requirements from the Swedish National Transport Administration (SNTA).
