On 28 May, researchers from the School of Architecture and the Built Environment at KTH gathered to present and discuss research with impact. During parallel sessions, 12 research initiatives were presented to more than 40 participants.
Fredrik Johansson, Impact leader at the School of Architecture and the Built Environment at KTH, and Head of School Björn Berggren opened the half-day event by describing what impact is — and what it is not.
Karin Ekdahl Wästberg from the City of Stockholm delivered the keynote and presented several collaborative projects between KTH and the city, including Västertorp’s sports and swimming hall. The project demonstrated strong cross-sector cooperation and tangible impact, such as reducing chlorine use to extend facility lifespan.
Additional research presented by Karin included sustainable innovation in construction (e.g. It’s Electric – from Stockholm to LA) and cutting-edge quantum communication. One example highlighted a 2018 demonstration of single-photon transmission over 32 km of optical fiber between Ericsson in Kista and KTH, forming the basis of a quantum link now used for student research.
“We think about you a lot, and we look to KTH to help solve many of our problems,” she said.
