Ten upper secondary school projects honoured in Sustainable Generation Awards

For the fourth year running, the Sustainable Generation competition was organised, an initiative by the School of Architecture and the Built Environment at KTH and the Företagsam Foundation. The competition, which focuses on the year’s best upper secondary school projects inspired by Agenda 2030, aims to increase young people’s interest in key issues for the future, strengthen their commitment to a sustainable society and inspire schools to teach sustainable development.

​By highlighting the work done by students and teachers on the upper secondary school project – which marks the end of all upper secondary programmes – the competition aims to encourage interdisciplinary approaches and working methods, whilst inspiring young people to contribute to future innovations and get involved in sustainability.

During the awards ceremony at KTH Campus on Friday 29 May, ten winning projects (out of 87 submitted entries) were each awarded SEK 10,000.

The event began with a welcome address by Björn Berggren, Head of the School of Architecture and the Built Environment at KTH. This was followed by two short talks that provided perspectives on some current sustainability issues. Sara Tunjic Ekeroth, doctoral student at the Department of Sustainable Development, Environmental Science and Technology (SEED), spoke about how society can manage the risk of flooding in a future characterised by great uncertainty. Ingrid Johansson, assistant professor at the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering, presented research on how future transport systems can be developed to become more resilient and sustainable.

This was followed by a discussion in which some of this year’s prize winners spoke about their projects and the ideas behind them. On stage were Ellen Adlén, Sigrid Asp and Vilmer Kindbom Tolvanen from Anna Whitlock Upper Secondary School in Stockholm, who presented their project ‘Student flat modules in car parks’. Alice Aronsson, Alma Lindvall and Lukas Andreasson from Procivitas in Helsingborg also took part with the project Green Paws – How can biodegradable cat litter be made from beet pulp instead of non-recyclable bentonite clay?', alongside Nils Uno Lundberg from Thorildsplan Upper Secondary School in Stockholm, who spoke about his project ‘AmnesiaChain’.

The prize winners shared their experiences from the work and the key lessons they had learnt during the course of the projects. They also spoke about their future plans and how they hope to develop and take the results further. The session was moderated by project manager Jonas Frykman.

The awards ceremony then concluded with the winners receiving diplomas and flowers from Bo Sillén of the Företagsam Foundation.
