Better traffic situation in Stockholm led to prize
At KTH a project is now underway to improve traffic conditions in the Stockholm area. It is so popular among Swedes that yesterday it received the “Prize for a smarter planet”.
KTH is receiving the prize for a solution that collects and analyzes large volumes of data in real time from public transport services, and GPS in taxis and trucks. The solution also provides information from cameras at the city’s main entrances and exits, i.e. the congestion charging system, and weather information.
“The analysis of large volumes of streaming data in real time, leads to smarter, greener and more efficient traffic in the Stockholm area,” says Harilaos Koutsopoulos, Professor and Head of Transportation and Logistics at KTH.
With the system, travellers can get information and suggestions on routes and the traffic situation. These new insights may shorten travel times, reduce pollution and make Stockholm a more attractive city. In addition, the solution can be copied to other metropolitan areas worldwide.
The other nominees for the “Prize for a smarter planet” were Vasaloppet Marketing AB and Dalarna County Council. Behind the prize is IBM. The winner is selected in an open vote.
