Hans Blix new Honorary Doctor at KTH

Hans Blix, a Swede mostly known among the general public for his being a senior executive at UN nuclear energy authority IAEA for many years, has been appointed Honorary Doctor by KTH. This honour is bestowed upon him as well as three other persons this year – Julia Hirschberg, John Quigley and Shankar Sastry. They will all receive their insignia at the traditional autumn conferment ceremony in the Stockholm City Hall on 16 November 2007.

Hans Blix´s early career consisted of a lot of international contacts in disarmament negotiations at the Swedish Foreign office units in Geneva and at UN in New York. He was then, for 16 years, a most successful Director General of IAEA with responsibility for verifying the non-proliferation treaty as well as peaceful applications and transfers of nuclear technology.

Julia Hirschberg, John Quigley and Shankar Sastry are all US university professors. Julia Hirschberg, Professor of Computer Science, is active in speech communication at Columbia University, USA. She is one of the leading world experts in speech communication, with experience from industrial as well as academic research.

John Quigley, professor at Dept. of Economics, Public School of Policy, and also at Haas School of Business, Univ. of California., USA, is regarded by many as the no. 1 world scholar in Housing Economics and Urban Economics.

Shankar Sastry, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science & Biotechnology at UC Berkeley, USA, performs excellent research in autonomous and embedded systems, computer vision, electronic control and hybrid systems.
