KTH and China talk noise

Published Oct 12, 2010

Researchers from Europe and China will now get together to discuss the environmental problems associated with transport noise, a real scourge for the Western world. The reduction of transport noise to the greatest extent possible is of paramount importance because previous research has shown that, among other things noise can increase the risk of myocardial infarction. In addition, transportation noise is an increasing problem in China as well as Europe.

The Marcus Wallenberg Laboratory for Sound and Vibration Research (MWL) at KTH is organising, in cooperation with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the first European-Chinese forum on transport noise.

Transport, particularly road and rail traffic, are dominant sources of noise in our cities and an area where much research is done, not least in Europe. For China, the transport sector is in a period of strong growth and there is an increased awareness to avoid the environmental problems that have arisen with noise elsewhere in the world.

MWL, which is one of Europe’s largest academic centres for research on transport noise, has been asked to arrange a meeting where Europe’s foremost experts in the field can provide an update of their latest knowledge and research. A further ambition of the meeting is that it also will serve as a kickoff for joint projects between the EU and China.
