KTH takes place among world's Top 100 universities
KTH takes its place among the Top 100 universities worldwide in the QS World University Rankings, which were released today. At 98th, KTH joins fewer than 20 technical universities on this prestigious list.
One factor for KTH’s return to the QS Top 100 is the university’s strong efforts toward internationalization. The QS ranking depends, among other things, on the proportion of international teachers and researchers and the proportion of international students.
“KTH has a high degree of internationalization, which is also increasing. After a sizeable decline in the number of international students in connection with the introduction of tuition fees, the relative number of paying international students has increased,” says Per-Anders Östling, KTH's ranking expert.
To belong to the world's top 100 has both a symbolic value and increases the possibilities for impact:
“It gives significantly greater international visibility and prestige as well as other benefits for KTH than if we are ranked in place 101 and higher,” Östling says.
KTH’s chief of international strategy, Christina Murray, says the ranking "stengthens KTH's international reputation and positions us as a leading university of technology worldwide."
The result reflects the university's impact on society through striving for excellence in education, research and innovation, she says.
“These activities are based on the conviction that education and research can and should contribute to better living conditions and to ecologically, socially and economically sustainable social development,” Murray says. “As a university of technology, KTH has a specific responsibility to develop and teach the knowledge needed to promote such sustainable development.
“Students are an essential part of this dynamic development and will benefit from the high ambitions the university has – to constantly aim for the best. ”
The ranking is based on several criteria: international students; international faculty; citations per faculty; employer reputation; faculty per student; and academic reputation – each of which is based on surveys to universities and employers.
“It shows that KTH has a strong international brand and that KTH's research and education has a very good international reputation.”
Östling says that during the last half decade, KTH has also made strides in the number of citations per teacher/researcher, which demonstrates the impact of KTH's research results in international publications.
