Two KTH cars in this year´s Shell Eco-Marathon

Published Mar 13, 2007

Every year Shell puts European technology students to a challenge: Competing for the best home-built fuel-efficient vehicle. In 2007 two teams from KTH will compete, each with a car designed and built by fourth-year senior undergraduate students specialising in lightweight structures, mechatronics and internal combustion engines.

One of these cars, the ”Agilis”, competed last year, too, which resulted in 102nd place for KTH, among nearly 250 competitors. Agilis managed to run 300 km on one litre of petrol (gas); the victor, a car from France, managed no less than 2,885 km. During autumn 2006 another KTH car project was started – Project Spiros. This car will be entered in the 2007 competition in the ”Urban Concept” category.

Shell Eco-Marathon was started 18 years ago; this year interest in the scheme is greater than ever. Petrol/gas-powered cars are still in the majority, yet the main increase in the number of competitors is among car projects powered by new forms of energy, such as hydrogen gas, biofuels or solar power.

Out of 262 teams competing this year, 68 are using new energy alternatives. This is an increase of 36 percent from last year. 155 teams are building petrol/gas vehicles, 21 teams believe in diesel engine power, and 18 teams have vehicles powered by LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas), which is a cleaner type of petroleum fuel.

Some 3,000 students from 20 countries will attend. Together with the KTH teams another Swedish one, from Chalmers in Gothenburg, will compete. The finals will run on the Nogaro track in southern France between 11 and 13 May 2007.
