Published Apr 24, 2009

Eva Malmström Jonsson, Professor at Fibre and Polymer Technology has been appointed as the new Deputy President of KTH. Her area of responsibility will be the role of education in society.

“It feels extremely inspiring to be part of the continued, future development of KTH. This is a major vote of confidence,” says Eva Malmström Jonsson.

Eva Malmström Jonsson graduated as a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from KTH and wrote her doctoral thesis in 1996 on the synthesis of polyesters. After this she was at Stanford University and IBM Almaden Research Center in USA for one year as a post doc.

When she returned to KTH she first began as a research fellow and then as Assistant Professor. In 2003 she was awarded the Tage Erlander Prize for her research into functional organic polymer materials with important applications within both photonics and surface modification.

Since March last year Eva Malmström Jonsson has also been Vice President for Student Recruitment, work which has consisted to a great degree of communicating what an engineer actually does. One project was “KTH on the inside” which was paid a lot of attention and aimed at spreading knowledge and wakening interest in some of the areas where KTH is active.

Eva Malmström Jonsson will be working as Deputy Present for half her working time and with the other half she will be leading her research group at Fibre and Polymer Technology. This group is developing methods to construct polymer chains directly from biofibres.

Eva Malmström Jonsson succeeds the previous Deputy President Tuula Teeri, who has become President of the Finnish Aalto University in Helsinki.

KTH will also appoint a new Vice President who, together with Vice-President Gunnar Landgren, will be responsible for KTH research matters. Initially this person’s primary tasks will be dealing with the new KTH cross-disciplinary research platforms.
