Research at the School of Chemical Science and Engineering

The School of Chemical Science and Engineering consists of three departments that encompass both fundamental and applied chemical sciences seeking more sustainable development through scientific excellence. In what follows the sub-disciplines of each department are given together with examples of research themes. Many of these are interdisciplinary and cross the borders from chemistry to, e.g., materials science, environmental science, biochemistry, biology and medicine.

The researcher

The department of Chemistry consists of the sub-disciplines organic chemistry, applied physical chemistry, surface and corrosion science. Examples of research themes are environmentally friendly surfactants, improved solar cells, safe storage of nuclear waste, improving water quality, improved understanding of natural molecular catalysts, development of novel catalysts for organic reactions, and systems for improved lubrication or corrosion protection.

The department of Chemical Engineering consists of the sub-disciplines energy processes, chemical engineering, chemical technology, applied electrochemistry and transport phenomena. By far the largest activity is based on energy research with a focus on sustainable conversion of energy and production of fuels. Examples of research themes include secondary batteries, fuel cells, fuel cell systems, environmental catalysis, and industrial crystallization of organic chemicals.

The department of Fibre and Polymer Technology consists of the sub-disciplines biocomposites, coating technology, fibre technology, paper technology, polymeric materials, polymer technology, wood chemistry and pulp technology. Common factors are large molecules, both biopolymers, mostly cellulose, as well as synthetic polymers with a focus on synthesis, characterization and processing of polymers and studies of paper and pulp.

Many of the research activities are carried out in association with major research institutes in the KTH campus area: the Institute for Surface Chemistry, STFI-Packforsk, and Swerea KIMAB. It facilitates alliances to be created between academia, institutes and industries, such as the Industrial NMR Centre, the Center of Molecular Devices, the Biofibre Materials Centre and the Swedish Center for Biomimetic Fiber Engineering.

Each year some 35-40 of the research students graduate with a PhD degree. The spectrum of research activities and scientific environments provide our graduate students with the necessary foundation for a meaningful professional career and a lifetime of independent learning.
