The proliferation of inverter-based resources (IBR) challenges classic power system stability assessment, namely time-domain simulations (TDS), in several ways. First, large synchronous generators (SG) are replaced by many distributed IBRs, leading to more system states, thus making TDS computationally more expensive. Second, advanced IBR control strategies, e.g., grid-forming, couple different timescales which results in an equation system which is more expensive or even infeasible to solve. Finally, the uncertainty accompanying IBRs’ generation profile requires large-scale, probabilistic assessments to adequately ensure system stability.

To overcome these challenges, the PhD program with AIT Austrian Institute of Technology focuses on data-driven approaches and high-performance computing to accelerate TDS.
