Title: Condition monitoring & diagnostics as enablers for industry digitalization

Abstract:

A technology revolution is unfolding around us as every industry is in some stage of digital transformation. The recent advances in software and hardware have paved the way toward adopting digital practices in every aspect of the product journey. In this seminar, we will discuss what digitalization means for the industry in practice and how it transforms the way of monitoring the condition of electric drivetrains. As an example, a method of estimating the remaining useful life of power modules against bond-wire failures will be addressed. The current practice of the rainflow counting method that resides in today's electric drives will be analyzed in detail. Afterward, more advanced methods that leverage data analytics will be discussed, and alternative solutions will be investigated. Finally, a laboratory test facility that has been developed for artificially generating data and validating diagnostic methods will be demonstrated.

Bio:

Panagiotis Kakosimos received the Diploma degree from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2009, and the Ph.D. degree from the National Technical University of Athens in 2013, all in electrical and computer engineering. During his studies, he worked on the design and control of power electronics and electrical machines, for aerospace, automotive, and renewable energy industries. Following his Ph.D., he served for one year as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Manchester. His research work was the development of a control method for a high power-density DC-DC dual-interleaved converter as well as the design of the electronics interface and peripherals. In 2016, he joined Texas A&M University at Qatar, where he studied model predictive control methods for permanent magnet synchronous machines supplied by multilevel converters. Now, he is a senior scientist at ABB and works on the control of electric drives and the development of data analytics and diagnostics for drivetrains.
