Electric Power Engineering student will present master thesis in China

IEEE International Conference on High Voltage Engineering and Application

Published Sep 13, 2016

Master's student Michail Michelarakis from the Electric Power Engineering programme, is on his way to China to participate in the IEEE International Conference on High Voltage Engineering and Application (ICHVE), where he will present parts of the results from his master degree project.

Michail Michelarakis

Hi there, Michail Michelarakis! You are on your way to China, how come?

That’s right! I will attend the 2016 IEEE International Conference on High Voltage Engineering and Application (ICHVE). It is organized jointly by Chongqing University and Southwest Jiaotong University, China, and Mississippi State University, USA. It first started in 2008 and has since then  taken place every two years in different locations. The ICHVE 2016 will be held in Chengdu, China between the 19th and 22nd of September 2016.

Together with the co-authors, I prepared and submitted a paper based on part of the results of my M.Sc degree project. In the conference I will participate with an oral presentation where I am going to present the submitted material.

There many funding opportunities for KTH students who want to attend academic conferences and I would like to thank The Styffe Foundation (Styffes Stiftelse) for supporting my trip for that purpose.

Tell us a little bit more about your master degree project.

The subject of my degree project was the study of electric field distribution of sphere-plane gaps, in a simulation level, with a further focus on the discharge characteristics related to similar electrode configurations. I had the opportunity to work on this for six months at ABB Power Systems, HVDC in Ludvika. It was a unique experience and my supervisors both at KTH and ABB provided me with great support and guidance through this time period.

A lot of master’s students will soon start with their master degree project, do you have any tips for them?

If you look at a 2-year master programme, the thesis project is the last part before obtaining your degree and it is possibly the most “personal” part for the student. The thesis is a research work and KTH provides a variety of research topics and plenty of options on how a degree project can be implemented. From my own experience, I would recommend students who are currently in search of a project to make it clear for themselves which research field they want to work within . I think this initial stage is also the most important, as the interest in the subject is what gives someone the fuel to demonstrate her/his abilities and put her/his thoughts into text. While working on a degree project, it is useful to write short weekly reports to the supervisors or even for personal use. This will make the final report writing much easier and less time-demanding. My warmest wishes to all the brilliant students for a pleasant and creative period of work!
