Eight subjects at KTH have been ranked in the top 50 in the ShanghaiRanking Academic Ranking of World Universities, which were announced recently.

The ShanghaiRanking of the world's universities has listed eight subjects at KTH within the top 50.

“This is a very positive result that shows that KTH’s research in several subjects has a strong impact internationally,” says Per-Anders Östling, KTH’s ranking expert.

The ShanghaiRanking  is one of four leading international rankings of universities. It is produced by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy and based on primarily on bibliometrics.

KTH’s subjects were ranked as follows:

  • Automation & Control: 15th
  • Transport Science & Technology: 18th
  • Telecommunication Engineering: 19th
  • Mathematics: 22nd
  • Metallurgical Engineering: 36th
  • Mechanical Engineering: 44th
  • Energy Science & Engineering: 48th
  • Electrical & Electronic Engineering: 50th

In the ShanghaiRankings for 2016, KTH had two subjects among the top 50. But since that period, the ranking has changed methods

“In total, KTH now is ranked in 23 subjects, of which 21 are in the top 200,” Östling says.

The subject ranking is based on the following indicators: number of publications in Web of Science, field-standardized citations, international co-publishing, number of publications in leading journals and number of scientific awards.

ShanghaiRanking uses different criteria for its World Top Universities list, which places KTH among the top 201 to 300.

“These rankings have a strong focus on awards, such as the Nobel Prize, and extraordinary achievements that are found in the Clarivate Analytics list of Highly Cited Researchers,” he says. In addition, the ranking focuses on the journals Nature and Science and the number of publications in Web of Science.
