  • A smart networker for a smart grid

    Published May 13, 2014
Sweden’s top proponent of smart grid technology, Lina Bertling Tjernberg, has dedicated her career to analysing the reliability of electric power systems, mainly focusing on the grid. This is no easy task, especially given the rapid advance of technology and the changing nature of energy during the last 15 years.

  • Lightning harnessed to protect grid components

    Published Feb 24, 2014
The foes of power grids everywhere, lightning and other high voltage currents now can help utilities track the health of components throughout their systems.

  • Lina Bertling ny sekreterare i IEEE

    Published Nov 18, 2013

  • She takes online fingerprints of power components

    Published Nov 04, 2013
Researchers don’t like them, nor do power companies. They are seen as disturbances in the power grid. But lightning and other natural high voltage currents are inevitable. Roya Nikjoo has exploited this fact to enable online diagnoses of power transformers. The innovative method landed her the international “Young Researcher Award” in high voltage engineering.

  • Spreading the word about smart grids

    Published Sep 09, 2013
With Sweden's first professor of the smart grid joining the faculty, KTH could become an international driving force on the subject.

  • Breakthrough enables long-distance delivery of renewable energy

    Published Sep 04, 2013
Smart grids are fundamental to allow increasing amount of renewable energy in the network. A much more flexible grid is also required in order to generate and transport solar energy from the Sahara to Sweden and connect more distributed generators. Researchers at KTH have contributed to the development of an eagerly awaited high voltage direct current (HVDC) circuit-breaker, which is essential to transmit renewable energy over long distances.

  • Three prestigious appointments for outstanding research

    Published Jun 11, 2013
Sailing He, Håkan Hjalmarsson, and Karl Henrik Johansson have one thing in common: in 2013, they were all selected as Fellows of the world’s largest technical association, IEEE.

  • Enhancing ultra-high spectral efficiency in 4G and beyond

    Published Jan 20, 2013
Andrés Alayón Glazunov combines signal processing and electromagnetic theory in his research. The result? He has discovered physical limitations on the antenna gain patterns in wireless propagation channels. The findings will contribute to enhancing multiple antennas, MIMO, used in communications, sensor and radar system, which among other things enables ultra-high spectral efficiency required in 4G and beyond wireless systems.

  • How to develop the next generation wireless networks

    Published Nov 23, 2012
35 researchers from 13 countries have written a textbook they hope will help developing next generation wireless networks. Andrés Alayón Glazunov at KTH is one of the editors.

  • Ett nationellt kraftcentrum att räkna med

    Published Jan 13, 2012

  • Thesis projects closer to the industry

A switch yard is one component in the chain of the power grid.

    Published Mar 01, 2011
14 industry-sponsored master projects in controllable and intelligent power components for electric grids will give students the opportunity to apply their engineering skills in an industrial context. By tying academia and industry closer to each other, EIT InnoEnergy gives students better hopes for employment upon graduation.

  • Diagnostiken som kan förhindra strömavbrott

    Published Feb 15, 2011

  • The Magnetic Material Man Jiles to KTH

    Published Jun 11, 2010
With magnetic cooling, environmentally hazardous freon gas and other cooling agents can disappear from our fridges. David Jiles is coming to KTH to talk about material for magnetic cooling as well as material that can, among many other talents, independently set the focus on cameras and reduce vibrations in cars. However his magnetisation model has now received a challenge from doctoral students at KTH.
