Our main themes of research are both theoretical and experimental. The in-house reversed-field pinch experimental device EXTRAP-T2R is a valuable asset.
Operation of the major experimental facility EXTRAP T2. This experiment received Euratom priority status in the European Fusion Programme in 1990. Experimental operation started in 1994. Outside groups, from KTH and other institutes (Swedish, European and overseas), also participate in the experimental programme. In the European strategy, the EXTRAP experimental and theoretical research contributes to the programme in two ways: i) To study alternative magnetic confinement configurations which have the potential for producing fusion plasmas with smaller investment requirements for magnets. The approach studied at KTH is called the Reversed-field Pinch (RFP) ii) To address problem areas that are of basic importance to all magnetic confinement configurations.
Experimental areas are plasma wall interaction and development of spectroscopic diagnostics for evaluation of plasma parameters.
Theoretical studies of the RFP include non-linear magnetohydrodynamics and associated fluctuation turbulence and its relation to transport phenomena and confinement, resistive wall effects, and edge plasma physics, as well as kinetic theory of basic instabilities.
Theoretical activities at the division are mainly directed towards specific priority areas in the Euratom tokamak programme. The tokamak configuration is the primary research line in the EU programme and major experiments, such as the world's leading tokamak JET, are located in European Associations. The theoretical tokamak research at KTH is in two primary areas: i). Physics model development of the behaviour of ion cyclotron waves for heating the plasma as well as for driving currents and ii). Model development for the physics phenomena of the edge plasma region to determine the effect on confinement properties of the configuration. This activity is carried out in collaboration with other Associations and with the JET experiment.
