Vattenfall Energy Award

For the fifth time the annual Energy Dialogue hosted the award where three best MSc thesis in the energy field received a cash prize of 40 000 SEK from Vattenfall.

As during previous four years Vattenfall donated a sum of 40 000 SEK to award the best MSc thesis projects in the energy field. The award was split between three prizes where the 1st Prize received 25 000 SEK, 2nd Prize – 10 000 SEK and the 3rd Prize was equal to 5 000 SEK. All KTH former MSc students who finished their thesis projects, related to the energy field, between October 2015 and September 2016 were eligible to apply for the award.  The specially invited jury selected three best MSc thesis and the final decision about the first, second and third prize was announced at the Energy Dialogue on November 24.

This year the jury consisted of four KTH professors and a representative from Vattenfall. Members of the jury included Per Lundqvist, Professor in Energy Technology at KTH; Göran Lindbergh, Professor of Chemical Engineering at KTH; Folke Björk, Professor in Building Technology at KTH; Lars Nordström, Professor in Information Systems for Power System Management at KTH and Magnus Berg, Portfolio Manager Technology Assessment at Vattenfall.

The main criteria for selection were level of communication, novelty and contribution to solving energy related problem in the world or in society.

Jaques Pellis, Vattenfall, Christopher Arderne, winner of the 3rd Prize, and Göran Lindbergh, KTH

The 3rd prize of 5 000 SEK was awarded to Christopher Arderne and his thesis "A climate, land-use, energy and water nexus assessment of Bolivia", supervised by Prof. Mark Howells, Head of the Division of Energy Systems Analysis (KTH-dESA), ITM. The jury motivated the prize as followed: “This study shows the possibilities given by modelling tools to plan for a sustainable energy system” businesses”.

Yiqing Zhao and Axel Nord, winners of the 2nd Prize, Jacques Pellis, Vattenfall and Göran Lindbergh, KTH

The 2nd prize of 10 000 SEK went to two students, Axel Nord and Yiqing Zhao for their joint thesis work titled “Immersed Cooling of Electronics”. Supervisor of the work was Hans Havtun, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Energy Technologies, ITM. The motivation was: “A well performed experimental study with high relevance to the growing energy demands in the ICT-sector”.
