Vision
Fossil fuel contributes to climate change due to the greenhouse effect caused by emission of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and other greenhouse gases. Carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) is a process consisting of the separation of CO₂ from industrial and energy-related sources, transport to a storage location and long-term isolation from the atmosphere. CCS is one of the technological options for mitigating climate change. By capturing CO₂ directly in heat power plants and store CO₂ in liquid form in bedrock, we can ensure a safe transition to a sustainable energy production the nearest 100 years.
Challenges
Main challenges for CCS are related to the costs of CO₂ capture and its efficiency. Very important is to find technical solutions that lead to very low leakage of CO₂ for a sufficiently long time. Understanding the coupling of thermodynamic and hydrogeological processes is key for a sustainable treatment of CO₂ storage.
