XPreS: Research for Excellence in Production

The vision of XPreS is to be an excellent and internationally recognized research and education environment within advanced production that creates lasting value for Swedish world-leading manufacturing industry and society.

The XPreS initiative for excellence in production research is going through a process of radical change during the last years. The fourth industrial revolution along with an increasing focus on the multiple aspects of sustainability are shaping the industrial landscape and the related manufacturing models towards shared and circular economies.

XPreS was granted funding to support & develop sustainable targets of production of individualized products for a future society. The production system is approached from an external societal point of view down to an internal factory and manufacturing process level. In addition to specific production processes and systems, XPRES investigates the relations between product design and production including new methods, materials, topologies, visualisation, as well as socio-economical factors such as logistics, business models, etc.

XPreS is an area for senior university staff from professors to post docs to shape tomorrow’s production science. It is focused on fundamental research at low and medium Technology Readiness Level (TRL). The research questions addressed require a cross disciplinary approach.

Impact

The underlying theme of all XPreS activity is the challenge driven effort to increase the sustainability of manufacturing in term of economy, human health and to protect the environment. For this reason the selected impact cases are aligned to this challenge and refers to a future where the current understanding of “ownership of mass producing facilities relying on endless resources” is redefined along the concept of “sharing economy” and “circular economy”. SRA XPreS receives approximately SEK 19 million annually in government grants.
