Review of research (RAE)
KTH reviews its research and research co-operation every sixth year through a Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). The most recent assessment was carried out in 2021. The process gathered 90 international experts who evaluated KTH and provided recommendations to strengthen and develop KTH's research quality even further.
The RAE2021 was based on:
- Self-assessments
- Internal review
- External peer-review assessment
- Evaluations from nine panels
Research fields
RAE2021 included nine panels that reviewed KTH's research. Each panel consisted of two to six departments and included at least one expert for each field. The panels were:
- Architecture and the Built Environment
- Biotechnology
- Chemistry and Materials Science
- Computer Science
- Intelligent Systems and Biomedical Engineering
- Energy and Electrical Engineering
- Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
- Mathematics and Engineering Mechanics
- Physics and Applied Physics
Outline
Connected to each panel was a group of experts, on average eight, of which one took part in RAE 2012 and one was a representative from the private or public sector. In addition, experts from various panels formed thematic groups assigned to review KTH work in three selected areas:
- Research infrastructures
- Sustainability
- Impact
All of KTH's departments were connected to one panel and compiled self-evaluations, which were put into one joint report for that research field. Each panel had a KTH faculty coordinator, who compiled the report. This work was later distributed to external experts for review. The experts visited KTH digitally during a so-called Visit's Week in August 2021. The assessment concluded in Spring of 2022. The summary report was published in May 2022.
