• The environmental issue to be included in all programmes

  KTH is now making an extra effort with their educational programmes about environmental and sustainable development. Among other things, computer engineering students will be able to study a new course in sustainable development on how computer engineering can be used to solve environmental problems.

• KTH involved in major investment in biotechnology

  One of the largest research grants ever in Scandinavia, according to Mathias Uhlén, one of the three people in charge. A Nordic research centre is now to be created with nearly one billion Swedish crowns in its budget.

• Sustainable use of Baltic Sea natural resources based on ecological engineering

  A project working with a system analysis of all stages from harvest of algae in the Baltic Sea to biogas production have been iniated in co-operation with the municipality of Trelleborg in Southern Sweden. The project are dealing with the ecological, social and technological aspects in the production chain. Comparisons with other biomasses such as reed and blue mussels are also studied in the project. The project started during the summer of 2009 and will continue until 2011.

• A smart experimental residence for students

  Per Lundqvist is involved in developing a unique student residence that will be equipped with smart and energy efficient solutions. He has done research in such areas as energy conversion and making energy use more efficient, with a view towards sustainable development.

• The largest environmental initiative in KTH’s history

  Several new heavy appointments, including a Vice-President for Sustainable Development and a new Environment Director. And a budget of SEK 8 million. KTH will now become a player to reckon with as regards environmental issues.
