Admission and financing
Each doctoral student enjoys a unique education, depending on one's project, supervisors, and individual qualifications. Completing the doctoral degree requires working on a research project that leads to a thesis. You will be admitted to the research subject integral to your doctoral programme, and in collaboration with your supervisors, you will set up an individual study plan.
The most common way to become a doctoral student at KTH is to apply for a vacant PhD position. If you are selected, you will be employed by KTH and earn a monthly salary.
Procedure to become an employed doctoral student
1. Look for a vacant doctoral (PhD) position
Doctoral positions are announced five times a year; in February, April, June, September and December. Application deadlines may vary.
2. Ensure that you meet the requirements
There are general requirements that all doctoral students have to meet, but in addition, you must meet the specific requirements mentioned in the advertisement describing the particular position you are interested in.
3. Apply for a position
If you find an interesting position and meet the requirements for it, you are welcome to send a digital application via our recruitment system that can be accessed from the advertisement. You will receive an e-mail confirming that we have received your application.
4. Pass the selection process
All applications are screened and evaluated. Both academic and personal qualities can be taken into account. The selection process normally includes interviews with a limited number of candidates, either in person or on-line.
5. Receive an offer and accept a position
Once the responsible academics have selected the most suitable candidate, all applicants will be notified of the result. If you are selected and accept the offer, you will proceed with steps 6 - 8.
6. Create an individual study plan
Together with your intended supervisor(s), you will write a proposal for an individual study plan, and apply for admission to the doctoral education, leading to a doctoral or licentiate degree.
The school admits you to a doctoral subject and you will follow a doctoral programme. You are now registered as a doctoral student at KTH.
When the steps above have been completed, you will be employed by KTH. Please note that non-EU/EEA citizens will need a visa/residence permit in order to be employed and reside in Sweden.
Other options for doctoral studies
The conditions and application procedures for the options above differ from those of KTH.
