Nanoscale structures have typical sizes up to one hundred nanometres, in between a few atoms and bulk materials. Hence, such structures have unique properties and functionality and have been at the origin of many recent technological and scientific achievements. However, due to their small sizes and high chemical reactivity, the study of these structures is challenging. In this presentation it will be shown how modern electronic structure calculation methods can be used to better understand the physical-chemical properties of nanoscale structures and how such results can be employed to improve the properties and functionality of materials.
