Mobility Ecosystem Sprawl: Innovating for Decarbonization

Issues concerning how cities are made digitally sustainable requires critical attention as to how they are transforming many social practices from the microcosm of a citizen’s everyday life through the linkages between economic, environmental, and business drivers. Mobility transition represents both a shift away from vehicles as a product to vehicles as a mobility service as well as a shift away from traditional models of ownership consumption to access based consumption. Emerging alternative transportation means and services hence provide a new spectrum for optimising transportation in and out of cities by adding diversity of alternatives. However, accelerating change, perceived as an increase in the rate of technological change, may not necessarily reflect equally profound social and cultural change.

In this seminar, we will discuss some of the key nutrients driving the continued growth of new mobility service platforms through the perspective of ecosystem actors identified with insights from Stockholm, Los Angeles, Sao Paulo among few. Through the observation of emerging mobility platforms and perspectives of various stakeholders at a city-scale, the study brings forward critical insights into the consequences of ‘platforms’ in navigating, staging, and transitioning the urban actors and social practices in cities, consequently formatting an intricately entangled mobility ecosystem.
