KTH Support for integrated Climate, Land, Energy and Water Planning in Lao PDR
On January 15 and 16, Shravan Kumar, Carolina Poupinha, and Francesco Gardumi from the Division of Energy Systems supported a workshop to consolidate capacity to carry out modelling using the Climate, Land, Energy and Water systems (CLEWs) modelling tool across several Ministries and academia in Lao PDR.
Why does this matter?
The country has ambitious plans for reforestation and sustainable land use, which will require coordination with water and energy supply planning to support the modernization of agriculture. With the aim of fostering the coordination across institutions towards these goals, KTH and the United Nations Department for Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) ran in 2024 and 2025 a technical assistance programme. This introduced the use of CLEWs and established local ownership of the tool. Now the ownership is giving its fruits and, while local academics ran new trainings with the government and consolidate the knowledge, KTH steps back and assists, turning the technical support into a partnership.
The workshop will soon result in the publication of open source modelling infrastructure and high-level policy notes. Stay tuned!
