Stockholm Heats Up for Summer and So Do We: Meet Our New Colleagues at HPT
As summer settles in Stockholm, we are delighted to welcome new colleagues bringing fresh and energetic perspectives that help turn up the heat at HPT. With diverse academic and professional backgrounds, Davide, Miguel, Poornima, and Alejandro will be advancing research in energy systems, storage technologies, and data-driven solutions for the clean energy transition. We’re excited to welcome them and share the impactful work they are beginning with us.
Meet Davide
Davide has joined HPT as a postdoctoral researcher to investigate next-generation power plants for industrial heat and power supply. His research will focus on developing and validating techno-economic models and optimization tools for hybrid power plants integrating renewable energy sources, power-to-X technologies, long duration energy storage (LDES), and advanced thermal power blocks. His work aims to support the optimal design and operation of these systems while exploring new revenue streams through flexibility services and sector coupling.
Meet Miguel
Joining HPT also as a postdoctoral researcher, Miguel will be contributing to the Horizon Europe-funded FLUWS project , which focuses on developing innovative thermal energy storage solutions for next-generation concentrated solar power (CSP) and hybrid PV-CSP plants. He will lead experimental campaigns to test a high-temperature, air-based packed-bed thermal energy storage system using recycled materials from the ceramic industry. These experiments, conducted under different charging configurations (including electrical heating and concentrated solar energy boundary conditions) will provide valuable insights into system performance under realistic operating conditions. His work is slated to support the development of efficient and cost-effective storage technologies for future hybrid renewable energy systems.
Meet Poornima
Poornima, during her PhD studies, will work on the optimization of energy systems and the development of data-driven methods for Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) within the EMPEDOFLEX project . Her research aims to develop forecasting models for multi-energy systems and integrate them into optimization frameworks for long-term planning and investment strategies at the district scale. A key aspect of her work will include the development of models for techno-economic assessment and decision-making, enabling more informed and efficient planning of PEDs. Her research will be validated through real-world case studies across European sites, including the Tamarinden Energy Community in Örebro. Conducted under the supervision of Jagruti Thakur and Björn Laumert , her work is slated to advance scalable, data-driven solutions for accelerating the clean energy transition.
Meet Alejandro
Alejandro has joined HPT as a PhD researcher and will focus on developing AI-driven approaches to better understand and characterize the performance of battery energy storage systems. As part of the ALT-BESS project , he will develop data-driven models to improve the characterization of battery ageing and will incorporate discovered insights into dispatch optimization for different operational scenarios and market participation strategies. Alejandro’s research will be complemented by real-world validation through case studies such as the Live-In Lab, alongside collaborations with project partners including EnBrilion and the University of Skövde, while under the supervision of Farzin Golzar and Rafael Guedez.
