Digital Course Development

Digital course development (DKU) has the task of pedagogically strengthening teaching and learning in development work where digital learning environments are used. Based on different areas of competence, we contribute to KTH's long-term development in pedagogical transformation of education with the support of digital environments.

Digital environments

DKU's focus was to support teachers to evaluate and develop courses and teaching materials in digital environments. The ambition was to work closely with teachers with educational development at all levels at KTH, from basic year to lifelong learning. By linking involvement in teaching, evaluation and research with course and faculty development, DKU tested and developed new methods that can strengthen the education of the future. DKU was formed in 2018 from KTH's open online courses (MOOC) initiative that started in 2016. Since 2023, DKU's expertise contributes to other assignments such as KTH's operational support and various research projects.

Projects and assignments

In addition to major evaluation and development projects, DKU regularly carried out workshops, consultations, coaching and evaluations to support KTH in general. A major assignment was web information and support for teachers during the rapid transition to distance learning in 2020. Below we give examples of previous assignments.

Online courses in Circular Economy

As part of KTH's efforts to promote sustainable development, teachers in collaboration with us have developed several online courses in circular economy. The project was funded by Vinnova and the courses started in the autumn of 2021. In 2022, we worked with quality assurance of these courses, which are part of KTH's offer in lifelong learning.

Studio environments and media pedagogy

In collaboration with a media educator and media producer, KTH's teachers can receive support in developing films and podcasts for teaching. In the library building at KTH Valhallavägen there is a small teacher studio where recording is done on your own with the help of guidance. If you work at the Department of Learning, you can book one of our studios via teacherstudio@kth.se . In the large studio there is the possibility of extended support and more advanced recording technology such as learning glass. DKU is responsible for the development and management of the studio environments in KTHB and contributes to the development of local studio environments on KTH's various campuses. If you want to be inspired or know more about film in education, read more here about recording educational films. An important part of the activity is to streamline and find new solutions as more and more teaching takes place with methods such as flipped classroom and live-streamed teaching.

Development of a distance learning basic technical year

In collaboration with teachers in two new technical basic year programmes, we designed and created digital materials that enable and strengthen distance learning. The assignment took place in 2020-21 and included courses in mathematics, chemistry and physics, where our subject-trained teachers, media educators and course designers, together with basic year teachers on different campuses, developed things like digital learning activities and film material.

MOOC

Between 2016 - 2020, teachers from KTH's various schools in collaboration with us created MOOCs that were offered via edX. The courses reached over 122,000 participants from different parts of the world and the work generated new knowledge about accessibility adaptation and flexible scalable teaching but also new ways of working with film, KTH's Mooc courses.
