They want to visualize our food's impact on the environment

Klimato - Global Goal 13

Published Mar 23, 2018

The interest for climate friendly food is growing, and more and more people are making conscious choices for what they put on their plate. But how can we know what options really are best for the environment? Klimato wants to make our food’s impact on the environment visible, both for consumers and producers.

Christoffer Connée from the Klimato team

Today, 25% of Sweden’s total CO2 emissions come from the food industry. At the same time, there is a growing awareness and interest in climate-friendly food. Now, most people know that beef is worse for the environment than peas, but how does pasta compare to rice, chicken to fish, or Swedish tomatoes to Spanish ones?

Klimato entered the KTH Innovation process in July 2017, and has since then developed rapidly. Their idea revolves around tagging food items’ CO2 emission as part of a daily budget, comparable to how you would count calories. By showing the effect on the climate on a scale, they believe they can create incentive for the consumer to change their food habits for the better.

While Klimato today focuses on the Swedish market, they are confident that their service will grow outside of the country in the future, and create a difference on a global scale. In 2015, world leaders agreed to 17 goals for a better world by 2030. By creating an increased awareness about the impact our food has on the environment, Klimato contributes to goal number 13, Climate Action, in the UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development.

Anton Unger, one of the founders of Klimato says:

- One of the major problems regarding climate change is that its effects are easily dismissed in developed, richer parts of the world. However, fact is that many of the consequences from climate change will have harsher effects in less developed regions.

He goes on:

- Our point is that climate change really is a global problem that requires global initiative, with solutions adapted to society. If we can contribute in any way to the achievement of the global goals, we have succeeded.
