Building technology is concerned with the engineering design and production of buildings that meet the requirements of users within the framework for a sustainable society. The most important goals include moisture safety, energy efficiency, a healthy indoor environment and a good acoustic environment through the entire life cycle of buildings. One important task of research in the field of building technology is to investigate and evaluate the characteristics of technical solutions, for example with regard to energy use or risk of moisture damage, and often the performance is evaluated under different climatic conditions. This may involve the development of new calculation models and measurement methods. At the same time, it is becoming increasingly important to take into account environmental aspects, sustainability and economy throughout the whole life cycle of buildings.

Dr. Kjartan Gudmundsson will start this lecture by describing some general issues in research in building technology with examples from his own work. In addition, the lecture will deal with some of the opportunities and challenges for future research in the field, with some focus on the opportunities that digitalization provides for capturing data and linking data, automatically and in real time, to digital models for buildings. This includes the possibilities to link user input and environmental data for building materials to building information models. Finally, Dr. Gudmundsson will give a brief account on participation in the newly launched European research project Recreate, which aims to promote the reuse of prefabricated concrete elements.
