What can we learn from attacks on academic freedom in authoritarian countries such as Turkey, and in countries like the United States, where democracy is rapidly backsliding? How can we protect ourselves against transnational repression without completely sacrificing the openness that characterises Swedish academia?

Paul Levin  is Director of the Institute for Turkish Studies at Stockholm University and Docent in international relations. He earned his PhD in the United States and conducts research on Turkey, threats to democracy, and foreign and security policy. He frequently comments on these issues in Swedish and international media.

This seminar is part of the seminar series Democracy and Academic Freedom and will take place in Ångdomen. It will also be possible to attend the seminar via Zoom. The seminar will be held in Swedish. No registration is required. Welcome!

Welcome to the seminar series on democracy and academic freedom, a collaboration between KTH’s Faculty Council and KTH Library. During 2025–2026, we will explore how these fundamental values are being challenged worldwide.

So far, nine seminars have been held. Eight of these were recorded and can be accessed afterwards. The seminar series will continue in 2026.
